So I ordered my 5.0 HO from the machine shop today:D . It should be done by March 5th (he had to order the heads and block) so my HO swap should be under way in a few weeks.
Specs are a follows:
Block:
Cleaned, aligne honed, and cylinders bored .030 over (306:D )
Cleaned up stock crank
New rods and hyper pistons
All new main, rod, and cam bearings as well as piston rings.
New oil pump
New harmonic balancer
Heads:
GT-40 iron heads from a 1993 Mustang Cobra
3 angle valve job
Thermactor bumps removed
New stainless steel valves (stock size)
New valve seals and guides
Valve train:
New stock 87-93 HO roller cam and lifters
new pushrods
1.6 factory rockers (I might go with 1.7 roller rockers in the future)
New double roller timing chain and gears
Misc:
New oil pan
New front cover
New Ford Motorsports water pump
Ford Racing "COBRA" aluminium valve covers.
Basicaly the only old parts on this are the block and crank. Everything else is new :D . I'll have pics of the machiene work as it progresses because the owner is going to take pics and send them to me as work progresses. I know :ttiwwp: so here's some of the valve covers to tide you guys over.
NICE gonna be sweet!
Dude if your gonna spend the coin, go with the factory trw forged pistons, not the 93 hyper pistons, hyper pistons are usless for nitrous, turbo's or superchargers.
Just my .02 in case of future mods.
The only HO that came with hypers was the 93, and it the least desirable of all the 302s.
cool
! you could have had a 351w built, if you're letting a machine shop buy all these parts for you. and its all stock stuff?? are you getting a reach-around, too?
I thought about forged but I really don't need them. The car is never going to see nitros or a blower so I didn't think that forged pistons were worth it. If I was going to build an all out motor then I would have used forged pistons. That may be in the future for a certain LTD II I know of;) .
It's only costing me $1,800. If I bought all the stuff + machine work it would be $1,800 anyway all together. I know it's all stock stuff but the car isn't going to be a drag car just a crusier that I can take to the track and turn a high 14 if I want. Another reason for going with stock stuff is reliability. I want to have the engine built and have it run for years with just general maintinance. The guy has been in business for 30+ years and he does alot of engines for muscle cars and drag/circle track cars in the area so he's very good. Sure I may spend more but to me it's worth it to get an engine that's reliable and built properly.
I dont think it's a bad price at all for what basically amounts to a GT-40 long block concidering that the shop is doing all the assembly work. The engine should make an honest 250 HP (maybe a bit more) at the flywheel.
I think you're gonna enjoy the hell out of it when its done! Sounds like a nice build. While the engine is out I'd think seriously about getting a 2400 stall converter. Especially since you already have 3.73's... Now would definitely be the time to upgrade the converter.
Sounds like a great plan! The only thing I would change on the long block is stepping up a cam, like the B303. Still emissions legal, nice and reliable, but it would "bump" a little more and give you 20-25 more HP. The stock HO cam is really mild. Otherwise, sounds very healthy and a darn good price. What are you using for an intake, headers, and ignition?
sounds great man. id still re consider those forged pistons. they arent expensive realy and are every bit as "reliable" as the stockers. i know you dont see it in the future but while its open it would almost be foolish not too., just in case. id hate to see you sometime down the road whish you had. consider how quick alot of these modern cars are. chrap, you need 300 hp just to "keep up with the jonses" fricken minivan these days. if ya realy want to keep it stock, dont even bother with the ho swap. plans change all the time. otherwise, enjoy the heck out of it. should be a fun swap. you have a nice car there either way.
Sounds cool.
So when you getting the Cobra/GT-40 intake?
hyper pistons are shiznit.
.
That's in the plan for next year. I plan on doing a tranny rebuild next year, when I have some more money:D .
If I was going the mass air route I would be getting a bigger cam but since I'm sticking with speed density I need the stock HO cam. For an intake and headers I'm using the stock stuff, for now. I plan on getting a GT-40 style (GT-40 tubular, Cobra, or Explorer) intake as funds allow. I'm also looking at a set of BBK headers as well as 2.5 exhaust again as funds allow. The ignition is going to be new stock Motorcraft stuff. I have a budget of $2,200 for all of this and the $400 left over is going for all the misc stuff I need to get it running (new Ford Racing injectors, motor mounts, hoses, belt, plugs, and other misc parts). I'd love to get the stuff now but I need the money for school, lest I get kicked out for not paying tuition:hick: .
I know but I just don't see the need for them. I'm not going to use a blower or nitros so to me they're a waste of money that can be spent else where. If I was you can be sure I'd have forged pistons in there.
After I pay off my tuition at UIC:hick: . Or you could give me yours and I'll send you a nice stock HO one for free;)
My car is still going to be faster than yours :shakeass: ;)
Conceited much? Its not the Horsepower or torque... those are just numbers. If you cant drive for shiznit, what are those numbers gonna do for ya.
Have a GREAT rest of the day.
Don't get pissed off because the guy has the money to do shiznit the right way.
lol
A bit sensitive?
How much "driving" is there to do with a car that has 250hp and weighs 3700lbs?
Brian, go away :D
I am a tad bit sensitive.. and Im willing to admit that 110% especially when people think their stuff is better
and your last statement makes absolutly no sense.
And Louis... Keep on with the car man.. sorry for starting a equal opportunity Hi-jack of your thread bud.. but it seems when I post things your right there and jokin about it.. IE when I have an underhood pic... yours follows.. ya know?
I was just stating an oppinion... oppinion stated. but still if you were gonna spend the money on this.. go forged..
-Clayton
think about it! OUR cars man! theyre not like lotus elises or some other super nimble wild creature. you basically stomp the pedal and see what happens :hick: :giggle: i think thats all he's tryin' ta say.
True that.. but my car handles better than most cars ive driven lmao.. we have a 03 intrepid too lmao
And when I tromp on my pedal it gets up and moves. :D
You'd be surprised at what dumb drivers can wrap around a tree :disappoin
Ah no hard feelings. I won't screw around anymore, well not as much:D .
My brother wrapped a Lincoln mark V around a telephone pole.. that was a FUN car to drive
heh, all is fair in love and war heh.. just remember.. Ive got a HO block laying around too.... just no cash :D
You'll get it done at some point. When you're 16 and in high school you have no money. I didn't. As you get older you get a better job and can afford those things. It was a pain in the ass waiting but it finally paid off for me. When the time comes it'll be fun to get that HO in there.
You mean a tanko Mark with a 460? Did it kill the tree?
Oh yea man, im happy with my SO actually. Its quick enough for me.. I just wanna convert to 5-speed and I cant quite do that without converting to HO anyway seeing I need the computer and all.
Oh yes. the big tank.. the tree killed it :(
I think you could use the 5 speed with the SO computer. Didn't CougarSE use a T5 behind a 3.8 with an auto computer? It would idle funky but it be fun to drive:D
I think it would probably idle fine. I don't think the computers in these cars could care less about what the tranny is doing.
Could be but I swear that CougarSE has some problem with idle or a decell stall when he was driving his 3.8 T5 car. I could be wrong though.
I heard somewhere that you couldnt run a 5 speed on an auto computer... maybe I got my refs mixed.
These cars and 5-speeds seem to go hand in hand... first one I drove was a blue 5-speed TC.... 86 of course.
He could've, I don't remember. I know the idle on an automatic is higher than a stick shift in order to keep the car from rolling backwards, etc while idling in D.
You could possibly hard-wire it to make the computer THINK its in P (to get the lower idle). I'm sure it can be done. Just have to mess with the circuits some. :)

lmao.. this is major thread hi-jacking.
Im gonna wait till my AOD goes out... or till i get the 331 done. or a stroker of that caliber. then we'll work from there
LOUIS!! TAKE YOUR THREAD BACK!
Ok but the machiene shop guy needs to send me some pics first :hick: .
Update.
The motor is almost done. It just needs an oil pan. I'd have some pics but he has over 200 and it's too big of a file to send to me. He's going to give me a CD with the pics on the 12th when I get the engine. It now has GT-40P heads instead of GT-40 irons because the P heads were cheaper and brand new:D . With the motor bored 30 over (306) and GT-40P heads it has a compression of about 10:1. I'm hoping it'll make a bit more than 250 hp:evilgrin: .
sweet. cant wait to see some pics man.
Soon pics will come I promise. I can't wait for the engine to get here:D
You're still staying with the stock HO cam?
Be a bit more peppy with the B-303 ;)
Sounds like ya got a good plan, can't wait to see the pics :D
But when 250-275 HP ain't enough, and ya start looking at forced induction and squeeze...you'll wish ya had those forged slugs LOL :hick:
Nahh, not raggin' on ya..but...there is NO such thing as too much power :birdsmily:
So I have two pics. That's it for now but soon more will come:D . Enjoy. It's nice and clean.
nice!!
Very nice! I'm a wee bit jealous actually. LOL
Wow man, that looks really awesome. You're going to love it :) .
That looks sweet, I can't wait till I do heavy things like that to my Cat.
Keep us updated.
I'll be updating for awhile. This engine is going to be somewhat of a guinny pig. I'm going to see how good a speed density 5.0 HO can handle heads/intake/exhaust swaps. So far the only things differnet from a stock HO will be the GT-40P heads and FMS headers. My next mods include (in order):
2.5" duals
GT-40 style (Explorer, Cobra, or GT-40 tubular:evilgrin: ) swap with 65mm TB
Adjustable fuel pressure reg after the intake swap.
I want to see if it's possible to make almost 300 hp using mostly factory 5.0 stuff. Once I'm done with that I'm thinking about picking up a LTD II 4 door for some, uh, "race" fun:evilgrin:
sure you can. just let nitrous take up the gap. :D
I want to do it NA. So I figure I'll probably make more along the lines of ~275hp.
Congratulations on the new engine. Hope installation goes well.
I think that hanging new accessories, within budget, also makes for a more trouble free ride. If for example, your power steering pump leaks a little and is old. You'd be amazed how much better the steering feels with a new pump. What about your starter, you might get another 10 to 50k miles out of the original but it seems like the dog gone thing fails at the most inopportune time. I see your using a new water pump. With the brackets and all the other stuff that surrounds the water pump putting a new one in is a great idea.
I hope you enjoy your new power plant, looking forward seeing all the pictures. :)
Motor looks awesome, makes me wish I had the cash to start my 347
I thought the only thing that looked out of place too was the cam. I mean you're going with the nicer heads, so stick a little bit bigger of a cam in there to take advantage of that extra airflow. Other than that, motor looks nice.
I would if I wasn't using SD. Then again I'm a goof :screwy:
Hmmm, ok, it's just an easy extra 25hp while you have the motor out of the car. Plus who doesn't love lope? :D
So how's this going along?
It's in my buddies shop and I've go the intake off:hick: . I haven't been able to do much work on it this week due to tests at school. I should be able to do more work on it next week and I'm hoping to have it running by March 26th at the latest. I want to use my spring break to, uh, break the motor in.
Lol nice. I'm antsy. Your car reminds me so much of mine, and how I wanted mine to be, it'll be so badass once that thing is back on the road.
This week work shale get done I promise:D . I'm hoping to have it running by early next week.
Ok well I lied :hick: . It isn't going to be running by the end of this week. I've had some tests and assignment due before spring break so I haven't been able to work on it. So far I've got the intake off, the headers off, and the front acessories off. I still have to pull the motor, put in a new fuel pump, and put the new motor in with the HO computer and injectors. I have spring break this week so I should get it done:D
ahhh spring break...good luck!
i was REAL happy to have my spring break, was the first week of this month. i spent almost everyday troubleshooting and testing (read = out on road driving wasting gas lol) and finally towards the end i found the problem (with your suggestion!!!) and got the horses i deserved. what a feeling. like a HUGE weight off your shoulders.
we're in the same boat--so hard to focus on schoolwork, huh? my car must run!!!
Well as an update I still haven't gotten the motor in yet:hick: . The engine was supposed to be delivered today but the machiene shop got busy so it won't be here till Friday. So right now my hopes of getting it running by Friday are screwed. So right now I'm looking at an empty engine bay. I'm starting to get impatient. This thing better be running by next Friday or I'm going to go nuts
Patience.....Remember the old Chinese proverb: Suffer Well.
It'll be worth the wait.
See here: http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showpost.php?p=136872&postcount=5
Well actually the engine doesn't have a stock HO cam. The engine has a Comp 266HR cam (part# 35-308-8) that works with SD. It has a bit more lift than stock and slightly more duration on the exhaust side (which all Fords need help with).
Pics of the empty bay
The K member and the old 5.0 SO
The new *BOSS* 302 (look at my shirt:hick: )
empty, my ass! there not be a motor there, but it's faaaaaaaaaaaaaar from empty. :hick:
Be a good time to throw a meaner converter on that tranny while it's just chillin like that. If you can afford it of course.
Looking good! I want to be at that stage sometime soon.
Good work!
Gonna do that in a year or two when I get the tranny redone. It's out of my budget right now:hick: . I would do it if I could afford it though.
Ok it should be running by Thursday or Friday depending on when I get time to finish it. All I have to do is bolt on the upper intake, attach the sensor wires, and attach the battery and hope she fires on the first try. Wish me luck. I'm hoping to hear *wirr, wirr, BRRRump, brump, brump soon:D
sweet! good luck
For an update see here: http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=13277
She runs!:D The car doesn't feel more powerful at low rpms and light throttle. However if I punch it from a stop it will spin the tires as long as I hold the throttle down. Get to 3,000 rpms the thing is just silly. It will knock you back in your seat at 60 mph and go to 100 like nothing. It's fun :D I'm guessing about 250 hp and 320 ft/lbs or so at the flywheel, and that's with 2.25" exhaust and a stock HO upper and TB. It'll be more fun when I get 2.5" exhaust and a Cobra Intake:D
:pics-stfu: Sounds awesome man.
I have to clean it so it looks pretty for you guys :D . I've been driving it and messing with the TV cable so it's a bit dirty. It's kinda scary now that the tranny is shifting right. If you punch it at about 40 mph in 3rd it will kick down to 2nd and get to 70 mph before you can say HOLY shiznit!
One of my fav things to do is to be in Drive doin 65-70 and getting on it. The HO pulls sooo nicely.
makes me wonder what my tank of a lincoln will do once it gets fuel when you stomp on it and not air from the rotted line. Nice to hear your happy with it!
