Title: Overheating with a TC nose and 5.0 ???
Post by: vinnietbird on January 23, 2007, 04:53:52 PM
Those with a 5.0 and a TC header panel, have you had any overheating issues with the stock engine driven fan?I'm getting ready to get busy on the project car ("Project Pheonix" as my son named it),and I can get a great TC header panel with the inboard lights I would need for $75.00 (probably a little less if I show the cash),and I want to find a little info out before I buy it.Thanks.

Well, I did have a small problem in the summer in bumper to bumper traffic with the a/c on. Not sure if its from the tc header but I'm sure it didn't help. It would never overheat but it did go "2 bars" above my normal temp on the digital dash. I went to a dccontrol-mark8 electric fan combo and all is well now..

i doubt that the 5.0 would overheat b/c i belive that most of the air that cools the engine comes from under the bumper.  the best way i could suggest to test it, would be tape up the grill and drive a good 20 miles, around town, down the interstate, back up the interstate, back around the town, and see how she does.  but also wait for others with the mod installed.

The TCs use a diverter on the core support to force air upwards so the rad sees it.

Do you mean the black plastic "spoiler" on the front bumper cover? That was the only thing that forced air into the rad on my parts car, but something could easily have been missing.

Anyway, that black plastic spoiler that usually gets ripped off by parking lot barriers is essential with any car using a TC nose. Non-TC cars have the spoiler too (after all, the regular TC grille is very small and wouldn't allow for much cooling by itself). Even with the chrome grille most of the cooling air comes up through the openings in the bottom of the bumper cover.

Well i have a TC with a supercharged 5.0L in it and i've had no over heating problems with the stock rad and 180 stat.
The only time my gauge ever goes up is if i'm in traffic with the A/C on and it's 30c outside,it still doesn't overheat but goes hotter than i like(just about 3/4 gauge)otherwise it always stays at 1/4.
Under the TC bumper it's all open with large holes, also has holes along the bottom of the lisc plate bracket area,it all provides for great cooling.
I just bought an aluminum rad but that's to help with the a/c in the summer and the fact that i tow my seadoo's around with it.

I run a 19"x31" dual core aluminum rad with a Ramcharger's dual electric fan (same fan as a 99-2004 Dodge Intrepid) Zero cooling issues on the days it gets hot here in Toronto.

I also run a 19x31" radiator, but use a 14" electric fan and shroud.
