If you're going to change the water pump gasket just change the pump as well. You can get a brand new Ford pump from Summit for less than $50. Also the leak could be from the weap hole and the water pump itself could be going out.

You sure its the pump, and not the thermostat housing just above it?

Mine did that too, several months back. It's missing a little chunk of gasket between two of the upper bolts that hold the pump on. Probably got saturated by coolant and turned mushy enough to squish out. Once I finally figured out where the leak was (1:30am in the rain), I had no choice but to do a quicky-fix, since I had to have it running to get to work, no spare car to drive, and nobody else to work for me. I cleaned the outer surface and down the crack really well with alcohol (VCR head cleaner), mixed up a batch of 5-minute epoxy, and dribbled it into the open crack. It's been holding okay so far. If I ever get time off + warm weather + somewhere to work on it, I'll fix it properly, I promise!

If you're going to pull the pump, like the others said, it's cheap enough to put a new one on to guarantee that it doesn't blow a seal by replacing the pump.  DO NOT USE A REMANUFACTURED pump.  Been there, done that, and didn't get a t-shirt.  Ruined a few, but didn't get any new ones.  I wound up putting another pump on about 6 months later when the seal spun in the housing on the reman pump.

Now, as for gasket dressing, I'm very fond of the Permatex HyTak or Permatex Indian Head.  Both are easily cleaned up with acetone (nail polish remover), and both stay soft, and both will seal the gasket from the coolant.  If like you say, the leak is between the timing cover and the block, then you got a little more work to do.  I haven't looked closely at the 5.0 in my truck, but my 3.8 requires removal of the dizzy to get the timing cover off.  The only accessory I had to unbolt and move was the power steering pump on the 3.8, but again, I have no iidea what the arrangement is on the 5.0 in these cars.  Never have seen one with a 5.0 in it.  On the 3.8, I also had to remove the harmonic balancer.  Not a big deal, unless you don't have a proper puller.  Do not under any cirspoogestanceshiznit the balancer with a steel hammer.  You WILL damage it, and from that point on, you will have a lot of vibration.  Apparently, dealerships in this area don't know this, and they beat the  outta my balancer when they installed a long block for me.  You can start the balancer back on with a few taps from a dead-blow mallet to the center section of the balancer, but pull it on with the crank bolt to avoid any damage.

Someone else is going to have to chime in on the 5.0, though.  I've never had any leak issues other than a rear main seal (as of two weeks ago) on the 5.0 in my truck (149,000 miles), so have never had occasion to look that closely at the front of the engine.  However, I have put 4 water pumps, 3 radiators, and countless heater hoses on the 3.8 in the Bird. (about 90,000, only 30,000 on this engine).  This car has leaked SOMETHING since about 3 years after I bought it new.  Oil, Tranny fluid, ps fluid, but mostly coolant.  I've put 15 gallons of coolant through this thing since August '04, and most of it went out through the timing cover gasket.  I have photos of the repair job tear-down on my 3.8, and will see if it's similar to the 5.0 in my Haynes manual.

well this is wat ia did i was going to pul leverything out when i got the water pump out n my water pump wasnt leaking but i still got a NEW one anyway n replaces it. i put ultra black on were it was leakign but cleaned it up first, but before that i unbolted 2 nuts then pu ti tback n tightened them. i think they were jsut loose. then i put eveyrthign back on and used ultra black . it all came out pretty clean. NO LEAKSSSSSS..  so i was happy i didnt hav to hav a bug project taking all of the stuff out. no oil leaks either from when i did the lifters only when i had to change the oil pan nut when it was bad cuz there was no threads . when i puit teh new nut and new gasket and my bro tighten it but then later on teh heat mad teh gasket thrink so then i had to retigthen it and no leaks. i drove teh car n had it to 75 today n it was pretty good i jus needa wheel alignment.  i love my t bird even tho it gives me problems some times it jus looks so freakin nice  :)
