The radiator transmission cooler is ok, but in certain conditions (hot weather for MOST of the year, higher stall torque convertor) an aftermarket cooler that is larger will be beneficial.  I run an aftermarket that then flows into the radiator one and then back to the transmission.

As for the radiator being half empty...Who knows.....Start checking for slow leaks....maybe run a compression test.
