so i get my car off the stands and i got to get it on the street. I take it down the long driveway and it is running good give it gas and it goes.
Turn out on the street and throw it down a little. revs high and i knew it was time for a shift. None! so i stop and run it though the gears like i did before i drove it at all and got it in drive. give it gas and it doesnt move like if a clutch was in then goes. so i pull in a driveway and try and back out. nothing. then it wants to go forward! so i get neutral , or what i thing is neutral and roll out. then into drive and wait of it to grab.
not the fluid
but....
i didnt switch the Kick down cable ( think i was suppose to but i thought id see if that on worked)
anything else it could be?
my thoughts went straight to the kickdown...
trying that today after school
Is the transmission pumping fluid?
With the car off, you can remove the top line going into the trans cooler on the radiator, then quickly bump over the ignition and see if fluid comes out of the line. If so, the trans pump is working and that eliminates that.
Otherwise it has to be a kickdown cable issue, unless the governor is stuck...
when in park it seems like it doesn't rev up. i give it gas and it doesn't rev up as quick or as high as it use to. if that helps. going to see if i can get it in the garage to work on it.
any other ideas?
not fully setting in the gears?
do you feel it shift from R-N-OD? if not.. try adjusting your shift cable.
so it shifts though the gears fine. i tested to see what gears it was real in so started in park and didnt move, 1 down
put in reverse and it didnt start, 2 down
put in neutral and it started and DROVE FORWARD.
put it in drive and didnt start, good
so im sure it isn't the kickdown cable and its not the shifter cable cause it shifts.
not sure if it goes into 1st on the shifter though if that help any
is your gear selector acurate to what gear your in? it almost sounds like its a notch off.
i can hear it click though the gears when the car is off. so it is in the gea it says it is.
any other ideas?
would a sensor make it do this?
i havnt worked on my transmission so take what i say with a huge grain of salt. but i know some automatic transmissions use like a vaccume to change gears. im not sure if our cars has this in the transmission. i'd either go to a junk yard that has a couple of the aerobirds/cats and see how everything is under there. i mean people usually just throw away really good well adjusted stuff in the junk yard. if you can, find someone that has one that running and check it out. if theres a vaccume line thats missing or leaking or what have you, it wouldnt know when to shift. if its a linkage type deal, it could be way out of wack. the worst case senario though is you've lost 2nd gear. i've heard if i lose 2nd gear i wouldnt even have 3rd or 4th. i'd check the linkage and such out real well. do you have a chilton or whatever book? you can get one from like advance or any other parts stores.
ajust your shift cable. dude... its probably your problem.
The adjustemts killed me when I first got the car. It took about 2 hours to get the car to get out of 1st gear. It probaly is your problem. To adjust it, shift the trans into !, or the lowest gear you have. Then loosen the bold holding it togather so you can adjust it. Tie a weight to the coulom shift to keep it in place and shift that to the lowest point. Now they should be *close* if not exact. Tighten the adjustment bolt and put in P. if it starts, your on, then to R, N, Od, D. so on. If it works then you solved your problem. If not, then I have no clue
S o switched the kickdown cable today which was a much cause it was sitting on the cat. Still wont shift out of first(see your ideas, Clayton and Mike) im not sure wwhat you mean but i will read it better in a minute. it wants to drive in all gears including park. Loads the tranny and when i turn it off it rolls back, when i put it in park it rolled forward.
Got suspended from work so i have all day to work on it tomorrow and no school monday so ill get it adjusted.
I'll give you setp by step pics tomorow ok. Just hang in there
tieng a weight to my column will do nothing, it goes to nothing. im taking it off tomorrow. i can tie the shifter to the back seat belt though
it will only rev to 2500. no higher, and its like it hits a rev limiter. i know it will rev higher
Just stop. I'll show you what to do at about 3 today. I go to work in about 15 min's so when I get back, I'll tell/show you how to adjust it. The reving thing has me confused though.
how common is a column shift in an aero coupe? i got a T handle center column shifter.
Yours is a sport. Most, if not all sports, got them
understand now but what about it going in 1st when its in R and N. i know its in those gears cause it will start in P and N.
The adjustment is off. The way mine is, as the indicater is f-es up, it starts in r. Just because it "feels" like it's in gear with coloum doesn't mean it's in that gear on the tranny. The only advice I can give, as I'm not there to show you, is fiddle with it. I'd have pics but It's raining outside and the light in my garrage is busted.
when i have the tranny in N it starts and goes forward. the indcator is not off it is in the gear it says it is.
So i guess that rules out linkage.
What could it be?
the more and more this makes no sense i wonder if it could be the valve body?
would something with the filter have something to do with it?
Any ideas? if you read this and are clueless say so! i want to know this doesnt make sense to anyone cause they could tell me the solution
Well lets see...
It worked until you fiddle-****ed around with the linkage in the trans, correct?
You might want to revisit that....
got a good sport tranny laying around? :hick:
I'd say swap that in and make life easy.
it prolly is the valve body. in a couple months when i take my class where i gotta rebuild automatics i'll come up with prolly a book of troubleshooting things for you to check out if its not fixed by then. when im taking the class i'll go ahead and get you to give me some questions to ask my instructor to help out.
it worked when it was a column if that is what you mean.
since i switched to the floor everything has been shiznit.
AutoCat if you would that could help out alot. everything that i have done is on CoolCats website under tech--column to floor AOD
i fugure that i made it two weeks without my car i might be able to pick up some ours at work ad buy my SC tranny.
Like I said....go back to the beginning....
How certain are you that you got it all reinstalled correctly?
Sounds like you're avoiding the obvious painful truth that you screwed up something and have to drop the pan again....
Just go back step by step till you find someting you messed up. We'll do our best to help you but you have to be willing to listen to us.
Let me figure this out...
you did mention column shift but change to floor shift. Is that correct?
If that is correct then please tell us shift lever position at the trans?
Shift lever point up = column shift.
Shift lever pointing down = floor shift.
All you need to do is remove trans pan, loosen shift lever 7/8 nut [inside trans] and rotate shift lever 180 degrees.
No doubt i screwed something you. I'll admit that with no problem, BUT WHAT!?
DONE!
i guess ill do it all over again next saturday.
Ok, for now atleast, can you try the column shiznit back the way you had it. If it worked before, then you messed up somewhere in the middle. I would go back to. If it works, then it's either in the adjustment or fitting of parts. Re check everything, even if you already checked it. If you could pictures would be nice. i'm willing to bet the fix to this is something simply overlooked. Some small detail that will fudge up the hole thing
Um...it's gotta stay column shift right now. It's one or the other (column or floor shift), but not both.
This is second-to-last resort. Get the entire car up on jackstands. Crawl underneath and have someone in the car go through the gears. Watch the shift lever on the trans. It should smoothly row through all gears. You can even manually go through them by pushing on the arm, if you want. If the person in the car cannot get low gear then the shift cable needs adjusted.
Did you check to see if fluid is pumping?
At this point...if you knew the trans was good before doing the lever flip...it might be worth it to have a trans shop look at it. They work on these things all day. Might be money well spent...
ITS STAYING FLOOR SHIFTED! i cut the hole in the floor and the carpet every thing to specs for floor im not going back!
IT'S STAYING A FLOOR SHIFTER! I CUT A HOLE IN THE FLOOR AND CARPET SO ITS STAYING!
got to check if its pumping. i can run it though the gears and i know what gear it is in when im in the car. so indicator is on going to adjust it again but with one click back on the stands tires spin forward.
how much, round about am i looking at to get a tranny but in. How hard is it?
Ooops...I mean floor shift, sorry. ;)
Well I got an AOD for $150 before, and it's not that hard to put in. Just take your time and make sure you un-hook everything(tranny cooler lines, speedo cable/gear, kickdown cable....) then it's just taking it out, lining everything up then putting it back.
i can get an SC for 150 but i need 150
snag the one from the sport for now dillon. that should tide ya over..
it has 177000 miles on it and one of the sensors is disconnected( for how long i dont know) i dont know if it even has all the gears. Would be the cheapest way out if it was good but i real dont know if i want to take that big of a chance. im saving for the SC tranny and going to see if my dad can call in a favor to get it put in cheap. then i have to tow the car.
will an 87 f-150 pull my car on a trailer? full car not the two wheel? cheaper than having a tow truck do it. if the 150 wont do it ill get the 3/4 ton chevy out.
Christ, my Crown Vic will pull my car. I hope the truck would.
It's pumpin'!
now what! Think im just going to swap it.
was revin it up at the TB and it would not rev past 2200-2500. but then it would rev up to 3200 or so every 3 or 4 times i did it. What the hell is going on?
is there an over fill hole on the AOD? the guy i had but the gasket on said there was but it doesnt make sense to me.
sounds sort of like the problem I had with my C-5. when I put it in neutral, the car would move slow foward, but would'nt go any faster when I gave it gas. Reverse would engage gradually when I hit the throttle. I had first gear, sometimes second, and third once or twice, but I had to shift it manually. I changed the vaccuum modulator valve and it fixed everything. Cost about $18.00. Hope your problem is just as cheap.
When I swapped from column to floor shift ( I had the original 5.0 and tranny then),I disconneccted the column shifter and linkage and removed it all.I cut the hole in the floor, installed the shifter and shift cable bracket.THEN,I had to drop the pan and flip the shift lever 180 degrees so I could use the cable.I then installed the cable, adjusted it and all was good. You did flip the lever on the side of the tranny didn't you?Just curious.
yes i did i wish it was that easy. not that flipping it was easy but i wish it was just a stupid mistake like that
