Title: AOD vs 5 Speed computers....
Post by: vinnietbird on January 09, 2007, 10:14:36 PM
O.K.,I already know which AOD computers will work for my H.O engine. Now for the question, can you use a 5 speed computer with an AOD (speed density)?

The difference between and auto and manual computer is how it handles "off throttle" situations.  An auto computer opens the IAC to keep the car from stalling when you are coming to a stop.  A 5 speed computer does not do this.  It does open the IAC for idle but its not enough to keep the load of the transmission from killing the engine when coming to a stop.

Thats why they say you can use an auto ECU in a 5 speed.. bot not vice versa.

Once again, Claude has impressed me with his masterness of the mechanical stuff...  go Claude!  You da man!

I had thought that you could use both computers with one of the trannies, but couldn't remember at all.

Dunno about speed density, but on Mass air either will work... In fact my Trick Flow headed/cammed 5.0 has far better drivaibility on the A9L 5 speed EEC than it ever had on the A9P or C3W Ford Motorsport EEC. The auto computers would buck at light throttle around 1500 RPM, does not happen with the A9L... As far as holding the idle up on decell, it performs same as a auto EEC...

I asked a local tuner about the differences and he stated the auto EECs have a more aggressive lean cruse mode(which he turns off), than the stick computer, otherwise are basically the same.

Of course this may not apply to a SD EEC, but I'm bettin' it does..

Perhaps I'll throw the 5 speed computer in and just find out for science sake.

what the heck. Its easy enough to do. I think the auto ecu has a better air-fuel (fat, rich)setting. Works well with mods,cam,cold-air,timing (more).

I've had two vehicles converted to 5 speed and run off of auto ECU's.  Both of them ford speed density eec-iv.  When you rev the engine and let off the gas it wont just drop down to idle.  It hangs, this is kind of frustrating when shifting gears.  My truck had a 5 speed ECU option so I switched it out and the truck has much better road manners, but my cougar is stuck with the auto ecu.

I'll instll the 5 sp computer later.I want to see how the car will react with it.
