Title: Those stupid little "nipples" on the headlights...
Post by: Red_LX on January 04, 2007, 10:46:33 PM
Somebody once told me those are for some type of headlight alignment machine, it attaches to those little "nubs" and helps align your headlights properly. I personally have never seen one of these supposed devices.

Anyway, it wouldn't make any difference if I cut those stupid things off would it? I wouldn't think it would matter but who knows if some place might fail you at inspection time for it :dunno: (the reason I want to cut them off is because I'm tryin to clean up my lenses and working around those things is a real pain in the ass)

Normally I'd never say anything bad about nipples but cut them off, theyre used at the factory I believe and probabally never since.

They're actually a DOT requirement for aiming (even the old glass bulbs in the four-eye cars had 'em). I've never seen 'em actually used for that purpose though...

I did this on my '96. They really get in the way when polishing, so I just used the Dremel and removed them.
No problems, yet!
As a matter of fact, I don't know if they even adjust the headlights anymore in WV.

Yeah I've NEVER had my headlights checked (except for proper operation) at inspection time so I figure it won't make a difference if they're gone.

imagine failing your inspection cause you were "missing nipples"

I thought those were just casting marks. Guess I was wrong. Either way, grinding them and the ford writing down makes them easy to clean and polish/wax

The only time I have ever seen them used was when I took my F-150 to the dealer to have the headlights adjusted. They attached a machine to them, made sure the truck and the machine was level, and used the numbers on the face on the headlight to make everything line up where it was supposed to.
