I catch him with the guitar he has now but wants to upgrade to something better with a couple gadgets if possible.
i think hes got a couple hundered bux,, a lil more im pretty sure. Hard to tell with that boy, he's a mizer, saves and saves then buys what he wants.
Can Anyone help out here? im pretty sure hes gonna be basically picking away teaching himself.
IMO, if your going to spend that to get a starter pack, in that style, I found that a Fender Squire Strat is a great start. I sold mine to a member on the boards and it played great. Nice sound, easy to learn guiter. A starter set, depending on what "options" and set you get, will run ya about $100-150
Check this out.. it comes with everything... and the Ibanez it comes with looks close to that of which your son wants other than the picboard..

I may not know dick about alot of things but I know guitars. I play in a gigging band and have been playing for 20+ years. Let me hook you up with a website that you can not go wrong with.
http://www.rondomusic.net
They have absolutely great prices and very good quality on all their instruments. Just click on the electric guitar heading at the top of the page. They have 8 pages of guitars ranging in price from $70 to $520. I have actually played shows with a slightly modded $99.00 SX strat. My primary instrument is an Agile AL series Les Paul.
They have a 30 day return policy and surprisingly good customer service. I lost the tremolo arm for one of my guitars and they sent me a replacement free of charge. The guitar was 3 years old at the time. That is great customer service.
Anyway, you and your son check them out. You won't be disappointed.
PS. The Silvertones are not good.
PeAcE
I don't know squat about guitars but I have 2 Pevee's (I believe that's their name) I don't have anything else to go with them. I've had them for about 5yrs in storage wrapped up. If he'd be interested in them, I can post some pics for you. Then you can make me an offer. I'd like to get $50 for them other wise if they are worth it.
I've been playing since '93.
Every Squier I've ever played was total .
I've had a lot of luck with Peaveys, Fenders (Mexican, American), Schecters, etc.
Guitars are like anything else - you get what you pay for.
Buying the cheapest possible guitar will play terrible and scare him away from it.
$50 for them both? by chance is one of them black or red? :D
