Title: Insurance Questions
Post by: vagnozzi on December 22, 2006, 09:13:52 AM
Hopefully I'll be registering my car this weekend, but I haven't called my insurance company yet to get a quote. Usually my payments on regular non-sports cars are less than $100/month for full coverage (and I'm 24 w/ perfect record)

Just curious how old you are, and what you pay per month on your fox cat/bird....mine is an 87 LS 3.8, converted to 5.0

Also, should I disclose to insurance the new engine, or what? How does that work? :dunce:

22-23 with three vehicles, xr7, 4x4 ranger, and a coffin on wheels... 75 a month!

Age and driving record are important to insurance companies - but location is more important than anything.

Example (My Brother): Age 43, 1999 Acura TL, car registered in Long Island, NY - Full coverage was $1800 per year via State Farm. Same car, driver, etc - car now registered in Queens NYC NY - Full coverage went to $3200 annually.

You WILL need to disclose the engine change - but in fact I think they will ask the question outright anyway. Don't hide it - it could be used as a loophole by the insurance company in the event of a major accident.

I don't think you would need full coverage (meaning Fire & Theft) on a 20 year-old car. Unless the car is a blown-out Show Car, it probably wont' pay - The insurance company will only pay out "Market Value" less a deductible. In most cases, you'll end up paying more in premiums than the car is actually worth.

SHOP AROUND. IN NY, Allstate is cheaper than State Farm, and GEICO is cheaper than either. If you own your own home, consider taking out more liability insurance to protect the home from being attached in a major suit against you.

Hope this helps.

Also if you combine you'r homeowners and car together you will get a better rate.

I'm pretty sure in the past when I've added a vehicle to my insurance, they ask me which engine (because usually cars have a few options) I'm just going to say 5.0L v8, since it was an option. I don't think I have to bother and say "it was a v6, now its a v8"

sound about right?

Absolutely sounds right. I doubt they check VIN numbers (which sometimes include a code for engine option).

You can always talk to your insurance company agent "off the record" too. Remember they are out to book business, not disqualify it.

I've never had an agent ask what engine it has. They check the VIN number to make sure it isn't stolen, rebuilt, or anything else along those lines.

Me I have 3 vehicles
1988 Cougar XR7
1996 Thunderbird
2000 Caravan

Total for all 3 a month is $120 for full coverage on them. I'm 26 and havn't had a moving violation in over 5 years. My wife, shes 29, has one ticket for an accident.
