I tried to turn off the windshield wipers, and there's a buzzing noise (only in the off position).I changed the column multi-function switch, and the problem still remains.I think the sound is coming from under the dash. The motor under the hood seems fine.I forgot why I quit working on project cars, now I remember.Well, the daily driver was actually worse when I got it,and it's awesome now.....except for the caved in front fender and brakwen header panel. (hangs head in total disbelief........)
Ahh,, now you reminded me ,, thats why i changed out my wiper switch.
A few years ago i would have to slam down the lever the lever because either of the three things would happen
1 the wipers would not fully retrack when shut off
2 the squeeling noise would start and wipers would be stuck
3 they would retrack like nothing ever went wrong.
most of the time the wipers would get hung up when i shut them off and a noise would whine from somewhere in dash/col.
I replaced the switch and still have the same problem. The switch was a good one from my other car.
man , this has been a long time ago and i also remember changing out my switch and that did not fix the problem.
I swear i think the fix was odd,,but then i just broke open my evtm again and i remembered something else.
i did go out and loosen up the mounting bolts on the wiper motor and fiddled around with that area just to see if doing that changed something.
For some reason i remember pulling out the governor since that is the device the actual noise was coming from. I think i opened up the box and found a relay in there that had a clear cover which i removed and sanded the contacts on it. Maybe i replaced the whole assembly.
Here is what i do know,,, my governor is not mounted where its suppose to be , i mounted it in an easier area to get to. This means i pulled it out for a reason,,perhaps the noise is coming from the same box on your car.
see pic of its location,,,,,,,,,its on the waaaaaaayyyyyyy upper left side of the driver side dash upon a brace of some sort. It was very hard to get to imho.
i remember beating my brains out over this but then common sense kicked in and i decided to locate the noise.
Mine done this same thing, I replaced the motor, and all is well..
Simple 20 minute job if got a "wobble" socket..
I also noticed that on the old motor, i could rock the arm about an inch each way, the one I replaced it with I couldn't move at all.
It is the motor.. my 88 did this very thing.. Infact there is a thread about two years old labeled buz buz buz from me about this very thing.... I took the motor apart and cleaned the contacts in the rocker switches. fixed.
Thanks guys. It's supposed to rain today so my repaire may be delayed. If the weather does hold out,I'll get right on it after work.I'll post results.
