Title: Garbage truck vs... um... I'm not really sure what it was...
Post by: Thunder Chicken on December 17, 2006, 10:41:45 AM
This happened on Friday in Dartmouth, NS. Apparently the driver of the car was in a big hurry and was passing a bunch of vehicles on a double yellow line. Now, we all know why they put double yellow lines on the road, right? Because it's unsafe to pass. Apparently this guy skipped that part of the driver's test. It cost him his (or her - the police could not tell whether it was male or female, nor what kind of car it was) life, but luckily nobody else paid for his stupidity (the truck driver was shaken but unhurt). *EDIT* It was a woman. The police released that info today.

I would not want to be the one to have to pick through that mess to retrieve the body, though a wet/dry shop vac seems it would be an appropriate tool. There are better pics in the newspaper (this was taken from their site), but needless to say the car was obliterated:

Where is the other car?

Look between the right front tire (well, where it should be) and the next tire behind it.

I have to say that by the skid marks in the pic the truck was heading away from the camera and spun to the left. It looks like the front of the car is sticking out from under the truck and the truck is laying on its right side. The passing on a double yellow theory doesn't add up from my point of view. Maybe the other pics would hold more clues, but from what I can see the truck skidded across the road spinning left and caught a car coming from the opposite direction.

Man sometimes i think that Defensive Driving classes should be mandatory for some people. Not saying that I'm a perfect driver but i have never tried to pass on a double yellow.

According to the article the car was travelling southbound in the northbound lane, hit the truck (which was travelling northbound) head on, then the wreckage (car and truck) skidded approximately 25 yards northbound with the car entagled to the front of and underneath it, then hit the guard rail and rolled onto part of the car (that's only part of the car under it in the pic - if you look closely you can see some large, mangled pieces of s silver metal that used to be a car stuck to the front of the truck). The article also states that the collision took place entirely in the northbound lane, and that there were several witnesses in the cars the woman was trying to pass. Sounds pretty cut-and-dry to me...

Wow, look at the flat spots on the trucks tires. At least he made an effort to avoid the accident.
