I have very little experience with SO motors and I am going to be hunting down some 5.0 Mustang brackets eventually and I'm curious as to what the differences are between Thundercat, Mustang and maybe even Mark VII 5.0s.
Danke!
Use T-Bird/Cougar or Mustang brackets. The alternator bracket is the same between the Stang and 'Bird/Cougar,and the steering pump and a/c brackets are different, but, you can just bolt on the Mustang brackets with no mods.Just bolt them on.I have an a/c delete kit and use the 5.0 Mustang steering bracket.Easy stuff. The brackets are all over E-bay.
Oh,engine differences....the H.O has forged pistons,E-7 heads from '87 up,and the H.O cam and headers, and a better upper intake with a 60mm t-body.Get the Mustang cam (wicked cheap if you look around,I got mine for $10.00 for the project car),E-7 heads from a Stang or a 5.0 fuel injected pickup,Stang Speed Density computer, upper intake/t-body/spacer,and a set of headers and you'll be good to go.You don't have to have the forged pistons. There you go.
Thanks Vin, that's everything I needed to know.
Dont forget the 19# injectors... and the HO cam firing order is different than the SO. SO=302 firing order, HO=351W firing order.
The 302 is ccw, and 351w is cw, WHY?!!! I don't know, but is a fact...
The 351w and H.O 5.0 are reverse rotation engines that both have the 351w firing order. It's the cam that makes the difference.Yep,19# injectors and 351 firing order.I forgot that. Thanks dogcharmer. That's about all you need to do the H.O conversion.if you have all of the parts and gaskets, you can do it in a day.
Thanks for the info, but I'm not doing an H.O. conversion. :grinno:
The Mark VII 5.0 is the same as the Mustang.Only one difference, they didn't use Mass Air on the Mark VII's,but the engine was the same. What are you planning to do????Come on,spill the beans.
Wouldn't you like to know. :D
Ummmm,yes,I would.
And me!
Hmm... Antonio's love for TC's + 5.0 question + Antonio's desire to modify = Yes!
How do you mean? Both engines rotate in the same direction. It'd be interesting to swap a 351 into a 5.0 car if the two engines had opposite rotations...
...or are you talking about water pump (or some other accessory) rotation?
The only thing that is different is the direction of rotation for the water pump...that's why you see reverse-rotation pumps in such as Jeg's, Summit..etc..
That's so you can mix n' match older pumps to newer engines, or vice-versa.
Brackets on a LSC are the same as a tbird/cougar the reason stangs are different are the hood clearance issues (i think) pulling the a/c,p/s closer to the motor.
I thought the LSC had a different alternator bracket. The alternator looked a lot bigger on the LSC I got my engine from.I may be wrong, but I remember the alternator being wider between the two bolt holes that mount the alternator.
What set of brackets should I use on a CFI 5.0 car? Stang then?
Either way 84fila,Stang or Bird/Cougar.Stang brackets are all over E-Bay,and there are probably more of them out there than the Bird brackets. If you don't have a/c,get the Stang steering pump and the FRPP a/c eliminator.Very clean look, and do the 3G upgrade while you're at it.
Aight, thanks Vinnie and sorry to hijack the thread.
Yes Vinnie the Lincolns used an 8" alternator bracket and the cat/bird/stang used 7".
An easy 3G swap for the 8" brackets is one from a 3.8 taurus. You have to mill down the backside of the smaller ear on the alt but thats simple work.
That's what I thought.I have two or three of those 3.8 alternators and a nearly new 3.0 alternator as a backup to the one I'm using just in case something goes wrong. It's been great for a year.I gather up 3G's any chance I get.I had about 10,but I'm down to 3 or 4.The 3.0 3G stays with me.
Hey Fila,I don't think anybody minds the hijacking,it's all about helping each other.
