Keep in mind that back then a hood release inside the car a a new a rather novel idea. Most cars before 1968 had only a latch in the grill and steering column locks were a fairly new idea as well. Makes a car fairly easy to steal these days.

My zephyr has an inside cable release and its 9 years older, but the pull cable is under the dash on the passenger side,  limeys :p

Best hood release i've ever seen was on a 50's prefect, you had to open the glove box and reach up to the center of the windshield under the dash and search around for a tab to push down, took 3 visits to figure that one out!
