My bird is now 5.0L HO with some mods. Has the noisey gear drive in it but you can't really hear them due to the leaky driverside header. But here is a small video clip of her anyways.
5.0L HO with noisey geardrive and bbk 1 5/8 headers (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmRBDhM16J8")
what the H E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS!!!!?
sounds like firecrackers going off then some weird stuff. probably cuz its indoors but why the poppping? :giggle:
and what is the "noisy gear drive"? is that one of those setups where you replace your timing chain with a gear in the middle or something? or is it the starter gear and thats why it makes the weird noise...? so confused!
Wow RJ, Now if I only I wasn't on Dialup...... Ah hell piss on it I have all night...
Yes
How does it feel to have the hard part finished.I remember dropping the H.O into my T-Bird,Man it felt good to start it up.Now it has a little more ooomph added to it.It's great.Did you swap the entire engine,or do the upgrade with heads, cam, exhaust and intake/Mine was an entire H.O engine.I have the parts to upgrade the current SO 5.0 in the project car,but I may hold out until I find a local H.O engine. We'll see.Anyway, congrats on the progress made.Give yourself a pat on the back for me.
that popping would be the exhaust leak I was talking about. You are correct, the gears replace the chain on the cam.
Thanks Claude:cheers:
yes it does feel great to be done. Swapped a complete motor from my old '91 5.0L Cougar that I had at CJ a couple of years ago. Wasn't really that hard to me though. Done many engine swaps on my own, plus having a full shop made it MUCH faster. The only thing I forgot was to put in the HO computer before starting it. :dunce: Next mod will be a set of 4.10's and 5 bolt conversion, then a pair of hairdryers.:birdsmily:
Pics of the gears, finished/installed motor. and my dad and I lowering it into place.
cool. that seems like a good idea. i wonder why that isnt standard on newer cars? seems like a great solution--no more chain slack!
Nice job and nice shop I’m jealous, and I did notice the GT40 intake.
That's an Explorer intake.I'm using one on my car as wel. It's actually a great piece and can be had for half the cost of a Cobra or GT40 and it flows the same.I'm also running the Mustang steering pump bracket and a/c delete like you are.Are you going to do the 3G upgrade?Nice work so far.You DID get the H.O computer in now didn't you?LOL !!! Made a big difference didn't it?LOL.
A lot of it has to do with harmonics. The harmonic balancer absorbs the vibrations and whatnot, and the chain isolates the crank from the cam. With the gears, it transfers it to the cam before the balancer can take care of those vibrations. Also, if you have a knock sensor, the gears will transfer much more noise and trigger the knock sensor.
I generally stray away from gear drives, unless im building a high rpm engine.
LOL yeah I remembered to change it. Sounded kind of cool with the SO comp though. Sounded like it had the biggest cam in the world. LOL. Might do the 3G upgrade later, but have no plans for it right now. Right now my need for speed, needs to get scratched.
Shawn is right about the gear drives, but I LOVE the sounds of them, (thats the only reason I did it) plus they take away about 8 -12 HP.
I figure the intake and headers gave me that power back plus some extra.
Looks good. Need to get those wheels off of it though, they're killing me!
Good thing you dont have to drive it.
LMAO, yeah they're bugging me too. I plan to get my old bullit rims back soon and throw on it. This car just doesn't want to leave the shop yet. Fired it up tonight and let her get up to temperature, to make sure there wasn't an air lock. Ran great, revved SWEET, (love those gears). So since everything checked out, (need to check fuel pressure tomorrow) shut the car off, just about to go on it's test drive, and the starter went. So now tomorrow it is getting a mini starter upgrade. At this rate I will be running the target I set for next year (mid 12's) before spring.:birdsmily:
Sweet
Only 3.5 moths till March :grinno:
