Title: Email Virus perhaps?
Post by: Ifixyawata on December 02, 2006, 04:06:56 PM
Ok, it's probably been a week since I checked my Roadrunner mail.

I have 3,000 new messages, that's right, THREE-THOUSAND.  About 2950 of 'em are "Mail Undeliverable" emails where it looks like someone or something has used my email address to send out spam.  I got about 20 over-quota messages from roadrunner.

Any steps I can take to stop whatever this is from using my email address?

They must've locked my email account due to over-usage, too because the newest message I have is from the 26th of  last month.  This rocks.

That happened to me once - Eastlink (my ISP) told me there was nothing they could do because somebody was spoofing my email address. It went away after a few weeks

Try changing your password maybe ??

That won't do it - what happened is that somebody else's computer has a virus, it pulled Brian's email out of that person's contacts list, and has sent out a billion viruses with Brian's email as the "return" address. Of those billion emails a few thousand get bounced back, and of course the bounced email address is Brian's, so he gets all the returned email messages. His choices are to either wait it out or to change his email address altogether - changing the password won't do a thing.

Meh, this sucks.  All this on the same day I got my first negative eBay feedback in two years (though I really deserved it.)  This email account is attached to eBay.  Any way I can just start a fresh eBay account and use a new separate email with it?  Hell, I might as well trash both of 'em now.

Ahhh, that makes sense.

I guess that would be a bit rash.  It's two negs, not one, but that still isn't much.  It'll just take me forever to get my percentage back up now.  There are a couple other items that I shipped late, so I might end up getting two more negatives, but we'll see.

Actually you can change you email address in Ebay, I have done it a couple of times, it is just that you get a little thingy by your username that says you changed it for about 30 days. I think!

That's only if you change your user ID. You can change your email addresses as often as you want with no "icon" - when I travel I change my eBay email to a portable email address that I can access through dialup with the laptop, then when I get back I change it back to my permanent one. I do this regularly...

Been a little bit since I changed mine, thanks for the correction.

I would think you could change the e-mail address for Ebay.

When you do start over-change it so your e-mails come in plain text format rather than html...doing this will limit the chances of you clicking on a stupid ad in an e-mail that could turn your  pc into a bot or bring enormous amounts of spyware.  I almost never open/reply to chain e-mails of any sort which usually tends to get hijacked!  Best of luck!!!
