I get the "new" '88 Sport !!! WOO-HOO !!!! I had mixed emotions about parting it out,or building it.I knew it has cool parts that could make money, like the floor shifter, full gauges,Locker rear, etc, but,I decided to make a sweet cruiser out of it.I have most of the parts I need to do the H.O upgrade to the 5.0,and a TC hood and scoops.A few more parts are coming on Payday from some of our members, like a lock set and a TC header panel.Project "Pheonix" has officially begun.
-congrats.....
:rollin:  :spit: :stupid:
anyone that would pay more then 20$ for a stock floor shifter should be shot in the head along side those tardo's that think a K&N air filter is a noteable mod for thier car... I threw all that shiznit out when I did my swap...
What you gotta do tho is get the 8'8 rear end, that way your good 2 go if you wanna add even more power to the 302 your fittin to drop in it....
My 2.3T picked up 12hp with a K&N cone over the stock airbox and paper filter. Need a dyno printout?
I dont mean putting a cone filter on... I'm talking just the K&N filter into thier stock box
My TC picked up noticably with an open K&N cone filter. It was worth .20 off of my 0-60 time. I guess I'd go kill myself now but I cant figure out which way the bullets should point:pbb:
Why? Because they dont want some ugly ass chrome stick hanging out from between their seats? Its a price you pay when you want something to look right, not something that looks like a hackjob and something straight out of the boonies.
I guess i should be shot in the head also, i ran a K&N in the stock airbox and DID get a gain, but i guess im wrong and should be shot eh?
*sigh* you guys missed my point... Its not a noteable mod... Sure it might give you a pickup... But I mean people that actually put that in a LIST OF MODS THEY'VE MADE TO THIER CAR... Hence half the people on cardomain... If you put a K&N filter in your stock box ITS STILL STOCK! That in no way makes it a performance mod... Its merely a different air filter... Where as a cone filter is actually a performance mod because your actually changing something within the set-up...
That sir is a contradiction.
Anything you change from the factory parts is a mod. Factory replacement paper filter. Not a mod. Rewashable, high flow cotton filter, mod.
The floor shifter is a hard to find item. It'll stay with the car.It has the 8.8 Locker rear with quad shocks. On Friday,I'll get all the little details.I don't know what the gear ratio is yet.It has very few options. No light group option, but it does have Leather seats with power lumbar. It has the py little no light sun visors also.I wil have to install a new headliner,no problem.I'm unsure about the seats and what I'll do with them.Recover or replace.Time will tell.About what 88 302 tcoupe's comments.....I guess we have our own opinions.I have a K&N filter in the factory box (minus the silencer of course),and that's a mod.As stated above, anything changed for looks or performance is still a mod. This new project car will recieve a lot of mods. The first thing going is the smog equipment, exhaust manifolds and Y-Pipe.Are headers a mod?they work the same as the cast iron exhaust manifolds, just a whole lot better.Maybe not (LOL).I took the aftermarket wheels and installed the 20th anniversary Cougar turbines.I still have a few little needed parts to get soon.Locks and keys, hood release cable, tan glove box handle, battery, and a new hose that goes to the heater core.It has a hole in one.Nothing major. It'll all come together over time.I appreciate you guys here on the forum, your time, and just hanging out.Great bunch of guys.
You sure its a 8.8? or has it been swapped previously? I know my sport only has the 7.5 with the quad shocks and trac-loc and i thought that all the sports came with the 7.5. I could be wrong and it wouldnt be the first time:nkhk:
"Officially", the only 'Birds or Cougs that got the 8.8 were the 87-88 TC and 88 XR7. There are numerous reports, though, of some 88 Sports having the 8.8, and some of the reports come from original owners. My guess is that late in the '88 production run Ford decided that they had too many XR7 rears and not enough XR7's to install them into, so the excess stock went into the late production Sports.
It looked like an 8.8 to me,BUUUUUT,I was laying on the ground. As I said,Friday,I'll have the old girl up on jack stands and I'll have all of the details.I may be wrong,it's been known to happen on occassion. What I do know for sure,is that it's going to be a real adventure to re-build and find find parts for.More trips to the salvage yards.
That's all you should need. If these gasket diagrams are right...
8.8 = Side bolts lines up with axle tubes, 2 bolts on bottom.
7.5 = Side bolts straddle axle tubes, 1 bolt centered on bottom.
.
I couldn't really see the rear that well as the car was sitting with the rear up near the front of another car, and,I wasn't looking for the details, just to make sure things were intact before it was towed.Even if it turns out to be a 7.5,I'll still be happy to have it.A T-Bird Sport in solid shape,$350.00 ($50.00 extra for towing it 20 miles),not a bad deal. It'll all start to come together (slowly) tomorrow.Stay tuned for more info.I may take some pics and have Fila post them if he'll be so kind.
O.K.,it's a 7.5.I can still deal with that just fine.Spent a few hours yesterday under the hood trying to figure out why it ran like .Found a few things. One,the alternator was gone.I still have my lifetime warranty autozone unit from before the 3G conversion.Got it on and then pulled the upper intake. Two broken plastic vacuum lines, and two rubber vacuum hoses. All fixed now.TOne of the heater hoses has a hole in it from the throttle cable rubbing it.The distributor module is right up against the thermostat housing.I think I need to move all of the wires over one position and time it.I have the turbines on it.They are from a 20th anniversary Cougar. The gold tint on them matches the car.I'll get pics soon, hopefully tomorrow and get them up for everyone to see.NOW,I need a battery. It's not holding a charge.Getting closer. No hurry,it's a long term project car anyway.i tend to get carried away and want to do as much as possible everyday.
ok.....buuut :ttiwwp:
5 year old thread?
Woah..... I don't know how i ended up here.... I thought I clicked "What's New?"
I was like........ what the hell?????? Vinnie got a new ride????
Hiccup in the board server.
Got me too.... although I can see vinnie building another sport!!! ;) go for it vinnie!!!!!
I gotta finish this one first.LOL. I still have some plans for it. I may get another Bird one day. I really don't put much thought into it right now. I have plenty to keep me busy right now, and a whole list of mods (very mild, can't even see them kind of mods) to do. I barely remember this thread. That was a long time ago.
Is it the same car? and if so, what happened to "project Phoenix"?
This car the thread is about is the Sport I have now. It's been through a lot to get to where it is now. The Sport rocks.
Oh I see, but what happened to "Project Phoenix"? Why is it just "the Sport" now?
Well ..... from where I sit ..... I believe you clicked "What's Old?"
The thread is an old one, but, the Sport is still cool.
Sarjxxx, as far as "Project Phoenix" goes, it's still the same project, but somehow, the Sport liked "Sport" instead of "Phoenix" as a name. She's got her way own of thinking. LOL.LOL. Probably gets it from my wife.
The Sport now has functional A/C after the trip to the shop yesterday.Nice to have. Now every single part of the car works as it should. I hate things to not be functional. The only thing I have to get swapped now is the hood. I don't like the scoops and I'm working on a couple of hood ideas on paper. Hopefully by Fall I'll have that idea come to life.
Now, window tint is next. That's really look good on the car as well with the green paint and black trim, but not have that military look, and the darker windows will help a little bit this summer, and around here, any help is appreciated to get through the heat we have..
