Title: trailer hitch
Post by: thunderjet302 on November 12, 2006, 08:33:41 PM
So does anyone know how to get a trailer hitch off? I have one that was installed by the previous owner on mine and I want it gone. It's been bugging me since I got the car. At the minimum I just want to get the reciever that hangs down under the bumper off (the rest of the hitch is welded to the fram rails in addition to being bolted on:mad: ) I managed to cut into it about 1/4" on either side with my dremel and a cut off wheel but I can't get any further in because of the size of the cut off wheel. I really don't want to sit behind the car for hours on end with a hack saw to go through the rest. Any other ideas on how to get this  thing off? I'm getting to the point that TNT looks like a viable alternative to get this thing off.

Torches is what he was refering to i believe though its not a good idea considering the gas tank is right there. I know on mine the is bolts for the cross piece seperate from the brackets on the frame rails but if its welded then that doesnt help much

Is yours setup the same way as mine?
If it is i would just take a grinder to the cross piece at the ends and leave whats left of the bracket on the frame rail.

Fill the tank to the top and cut from the inside out

Mine's much beefier. I think it's a class III. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow.

My tank is full...........but I don't have a torch.

If your tank isn't leaking hot wrenches shouldn't be a problem anyway. If it's welded on and doesn't come apart like 88sportcoupe's, torches will be just about your only option. Just get somebody that knows how to use torches to do it...

I think I'll get my mechanic to torch the  thing off in the spring. Or if I get bored next wekend I'll go at it some more with the hack saw:dunce: . An hour a week for 8 weeks in a row and it'll come off:grinno:

It's actually the only rusty thing on my car. I wouldn't trust it with a trailer.
