Woooow...stupid morons. My dad has told me since day 1 to always check the car's security on a life BEFORE raising it all the way. Raise it 6 inches, rock the car around to make sure. AND, ALWAYS READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!! The guy specifically pointed out the INSTRUCTIONS. Jeez. I'm glad 99% of my Tbird's work gets done at home.

I've always said, "those that can afford cars like that can afford to have them fixed"(or substitute "...can care less about gas prices") Still, though, that sux.

When I worked at the Saturn dealership I almost lost a Jeep Wrangler off my lift, but at least I can blame mechanical failure :hick:
I had set the lift arms up, raised the Jeep until all four wheels were clear of the ground, then "rocked" it to make sure it was safe. It seemed OK, so I continued putting it up. Once fully up I got under it and started taking the rear diff cover bolts off (I had it in the air to replace an axle shaft, the Jeep was a used vehicle belonging to the dealership). As I touched the socket to one of the bolts the entire rear started raising. Instinctively (meaning without thinking) I grabbed the rear and pulled it back down, then realized what had happened: One of the front arms on the hoist kicked out, so the Jeep was now being supported by three arms and me. It was now too late - if I let go of that rear end the whole thing could come crashing down on me. I started hollering and the service manager came running. When he saw my predicament he slid the tranny jack under the Jeep's frame where the hoist arm hand kicked out, then pumped the jack until it was carrying the weight that the hoist should've been carrying. Only then could I let go of that rear end and get out from under the Jeep. It was without a doubt the scariest few minutes of my life.
To get the Jeep down we had to actually jack the thing up with the tranny jack far enough to get the hoist arm back under the frame, then lower it normally. After it was down we found the probem: the locking mechanism that is supposed to hold the hoist arm in place had all its teeth stripped out. You are supposed to have to pull up on a ring to release the lock before the arm could be moved. I always instintively pulled the ring any time I wanted to move the arm, so it had not occured to me to try moving it without the ring pulled. The hoist was promptly condemned by the N.S. Dept of Labour (the hoist repairman had to report the violation under law) until it was repaired.

that locus needs to be replaced and i would have got into a fight if that was my bronco and he said that doesnt matter, yes it does cause i didnt do it and you Fd up i would probily just B smacked him for that dumb ass comment

I saw that the other day on Jalopnik. I guess it's pretty tough to lift those rear engine Elises. To lift it with a four arm lift require the removal of the rear clam shell. Guess the guy is getting a new Elise after this one.

Now you know why I don't trust ANYONE with my car. I don't drop it off. I stay and supervise.
I had new tires (fat ones) put on the cat a couple weeks ago and I went out to make sure they didn't crush the skirts with the lift. I kept an eye on them the whole time. Made sure they didn't put weights on the outside of my wheels, made sure they put the chrome sleeves and caps back on the valve stems BEFORE they balenced them....
Never trust a mechanic with your car. Never EVER trust ANYONE with your car.

How many of you guys bashing the mechanics have been on that side of the line.
Me I did that for 5 years. I have dealt with all types of people. So nice and some not so nice. The more you bug the mechanic, tire person or who ever the more you iritate them. The more you iritate them the faster they try to get you out of there. And guess what happens when they try and get you out of the shop fast. Stuff gets screwed up.
Hell I have messed up lug stud and . But you know what the nicer you are to a mechanic the better you will get treated. Tell the guy at the counter all the special info needed and make sure it is on the paper work. Then if something gets damaged you can now say that you told them. Me personaly if I need tires I take in loose rims. I'm picky about who drives my cars. Yes this is coming from a person that works in the shop.
I guess what I'm trying to say is if you are that picky about the work done to your car do it yourself.
And as for the two cars getting trashed by the service personel. Ya I would have to say they should have been fired on the spot and the company should replace the things that were broke.

I can relate. I took some tires in to a shop to have them mounted, I didnt trust them with the whole car, while there they asked if I needed anything else. In this great moment of stupidity I said I needed a oil change on the vehicle I had driven in figuring they cant f--- that up. WRONG. I saw my explorer go around the building and then heard a huge crash. The guy was putting it on a drive on lift and mashed the gas instead of the brake. Well it launched right off the lift over the computers between lifts and landed on the frt of a caddy in the opposite bay. The guy working on the caddy was a black guy and he literally turned white. In the end turned out the guy had an artificial leg and wasnt to drive customer cars. They repaired it and gave me a few thousand more for the loss in value to the truck. After driving it off the caddy I actually drove it home. I guess I needed to relearn why I dont leave my vehicles with others. If you want to do some Dukes of Hazzard type shiznit though go get a Explorer. By the way the caddy was flattened.

Amen to that. I only did that for 2 years, and found out the first week how much a customer can annoy you.

Man, something like that happend at work about a month ago, only it was the other mechanic's truck. The arms had been put under where the frame slopes, so the truck slid backwards. It bent the box up, and the cab corners. Good thing those were planning on being replaced.

OMG, his license plate is hilarious!
Yeah, I don't like taking my car to the shop. I do the same thing taking loose rims and tires in to be mounted. Don't like people driving my car either.
I've taken the Tib to the dealer to get some warranty repairs and have been greeted with various scratches and one paint chip with a small ding on the bottom edge of my door.

I had the same thing happen with me when i still was a tire/oil jockey but i had a fullsize K1500 chevy truck that i had to grab onto, kinda felt like an ass considering the guy was standing right there.

I know, I'm just jealous of the Elise. I saw one in real life and I was stunned, so so small. And they're only $30k or so, right? Just don't seem like they'd be safe in a crash.

Cheapest I've seen was 30k. I'd still love to get a hold of a Lotus Exige, an Elise on crack if you will.
