Title: Do I have something missing too? Update 11/23
Post by: CougarSE on November 03, 2006, 01:36:11 PM
:grinno:.

*update*
I'll let you all in what I'm doing.  I'm usualy one to wait till the end but this one will be different.

Having previously changed my cluster to the TC unit that left me with a bunch of hacked connectors on the back of my dash.. So I decided to change the dash harness out to one that was stock with the buttstuffog cluster.

*enter Jim* (8birdy8)

After spending days going over the differences of fox harness's I decided to try an 88 TC dash harness.  The only things different between the tc dash harness and the cougar harness besides the obvios cluster are things that dont matter as my car doesn't even have those.  Like ride control and fuel selector.  Oh and Jim is the one who had the TC harness.

*what changes*
Besides the cluster this harness has the ATC, fog lights and systems sentry.  Jim and I also discovered that the cornering lamps require nothing more than two harness changes to convert any car.  More on this later as I will probably make a little write up about it.

*hard part*
Since RJ confirmed my suspision that the dash to engine connectors are the same between (88 only) v6 and v8 cars that I will have to do the same things that someone isntalling a v8 into a TC would have to do.  Hard? Not likely.

*results*
Aside from the pretty black dash (that will lead to me painting more parts on my coffee table yes) I will gain a bunch of popular options.  Number one thing I wanted with doing this was the unhacked connector for the cluster.  I will be getting ATC, systems sentry (even though half of it will not work, for now), cornering lamps and stock functioning fog lights. Wich leads me to another discovery, the connectors for TC and other cars headlight harnesses are different, regardless of cornering lamps.  The TC has a black connector and the other cars have a grey connector.

So I'll have to convert to the TC headlight harness, wich also makes for good things because I'll be converting my bumper back to the TC bumper I had installed in 05. ( a nicer condition one this time though). fog lights FTW.

I'll be converting my air box because they are different between atc and non atc cars.  Also the blend door on the back of the dash is different, thanks Jim for pointing this out.  I already have all these parts but I'm still tracking down one stupid little part that is buried in the dash and impossible to get too when its back together.  The harness extension and through firewall gromet for the heater core line sensor.

You may consider installing a relay in the fog light wiring to take the load off of the switch.

Isn't it nice that you can do this now? Glad to see you haven't sped the car.

I had a crack free blue dash for the '88. Its developed a couple since it's been sitting for the past year and a half though :(

Mine didn't work when I got it. I started to trouble shoot it and at some point it was just easier to run a new wire from the lights and put a relay under the dash.

Alright Cluade, how did you prep the dash, and what brand vinyl die?

I used these three products to get the paint on.

Prep all does a  good job of cleaning the dash vinyl without damaging it like continued contact with laqeur(sp?) thinner does.

The self etching primer I was told to use by a few different sources.  It does make the paint stick better than just spraying the vinyl.

Then the paint itself is just stuff I get at autohole.  It looks nice, I get the satin like dye, as there is a gloss as well.  This looks stock and under some armor all will look absolutely fabulous.

Wiring harness is in.  Its untaped because this harness was used to compare to v6/8 harnesses.

And yes thats a black console to go along with it.

Dam Impressive!

I don't even know how to take that dash apart as much as you did, and real great work on the harness research.

Well almost got it together today, ran out of daylight.

Here are the two heater boxes, the one I'm using is in the back.

Here is the box installed.

All of the ducting mounted back up.

And the finished product.  Its pretty much all done except for a few more connects then it can be bolted down.

Very cool man.

Time to change my dash now, since nobody seems to be intrested in buying the bird.

You, sir, have undertaken a daunting task.  My hat goes off to you.  What a mess of wires and ducting behind that thing, huh?  Wow.

Figured it was time for an update.

The dash is bolted all the way in now, but the console is just laying there.

Now does anyone know off hand what these are?

I've heard tales of this one, and I think it has something to do with my fuel pump not kicking on.

This one is under the dash on the left side.  Thats not to say it should be ther.

This one is poking through the hold where the firm ride and fuel switch are.

These are behind the radio but I think they are for the firm ride and fuel as well.

Now this one...  its over by the passenger foot well where the computer is.

IT runs!  Still have to sort some issues out.  The guages dont work, except the fuel guage.  And I started it with a screw driver over the soleniod as something is not in the loop of the nuetral safety thing.

After all that work, you'll get the gauges right.I have gone through the whole process myself a few years ago.Gave me goose bumps and the shivers.I'm glad it's over.Tell me something, where does the cornering lamp harness plug in at?The project car I just bought doesn't have them, but I want it to.My current 'Bird has them, but I don't want to rtear into it looking for things.I want to leave it alone.Thanks.

Picture 5 looks like a speaker harness plug, picture 7 looks like it may be one of the radio harnesses. I'm prolly wrong though.

I am pretty sure anyway.
