Would you buy this car if it were within a few miles of your house?
And if so, for how much?
If not, why?
Assume it is accident-free.
We've all seen the numerous transactions for less than $1000 for pretty decent cars and then a bunch in the low $1K range.
That half-roof and the undercoating in the engine bay really take away from the car IMO but it is still a low-mileage mid-trim-level cat. I would buy it but anything I would offer would probably insult the owner so I wanted to see what you all thought.

prolly something in the area of 2800-3200 would be my top w/o seeing it. Have to be 101% rust free to get that number outa me. Bad is CFI injection, old tyme radio, ugly wheels/tires, no console.
All that said it does look decent.
I've never seen an old-person spec Coug look sooo good. I'd have to figure out how to lose the 1/2 top w/o messing up the paint as the rest of the car looks really nice. You know what, forget that. I think everybody has herd aboud the low 9 second Nova with the twin-blown LS1 that looks 3 feet from a junkyard. I'd do that. Drop a 347 in it with a centrifugal, water-to-air intercooler, Tremec 3550, and a 4.11 8.8. 13" front brakes, 11" rears, powdercoat some aluminum welds black then mount the 4-spoke poly covers to them. Leave the interior untouched. God that would be cool! *evil whistling*
So I'd offer about $1500 ish, that's about the going rate for a nice, original, rust-free Coug up here.
I paid $3k for my '88 with 47k miles, so I could see paying $3800 for that car. It's a nice and uncommon colour, interesting option combo (high level door panels but base cluster and consolette), and would be a perfect sleeper. I'd hit it :D
I gotta say that I probably would.
For example, if I found a car in the same condition as Thunderchicken's, locally, I would pay three grand for it tomorow, no doubt. I have the $$ in my "toy" fund. Except unless I found a snowmobile, boat, ATV or simialr that I needed/wanted more at the time.
I wouldn't worry about hurting the sellers feelings. When talking about the original owner, he said, "She passed away last February. At that time I acquired the car." I read that to mean, "I bought it cheap and am trying to make some easy money on it." I don't fault him for it, I'm just saying you shouldn't hurt his feelings because it's just a car to him. It's not like he bought it new and has 20 years of sentiment in it. Either way, it's a sharp car. Good luck!
If it were an 84 without the 1/2 top ill pay 3000 for it, maybe even if it were a V6. I really want a clean 83/84 cougar, but to find one of these here is maybe impossible. My Cougar is still wrecked from the right fender (and that was a year ago!) and still looks better than many cougars here.......
any one else notice the milage? looks like 11k to me.
good price for condition but they will have a hard time getting it out of it.
He's got it advertised as having 12k, but you're right - that odo shows 11
$3,000 at the most because of the half roof and CFI. I paid $1,000 for mine (in my sig) and it had 110,000 when I bought it. Now it has 127,000 and I've had people offer me $4,000 for it a couple of times
That's what my thoughts are. For instance, I've posted two threads on here and I think there was a thread posted about this car a while back and still no takers. If there is any group that would have a buyer for this car, this is it. But no takers yet. We are buying cars all the time here and this one is within a few hours of a lot of active members of this board.
yes i would but the wheels have to go !
