Title: head gasket replacement query
Post by: logneill on January 02, 2005, 12:39:09 PM
All right, I've concluded that the passenger side head gasket on my 1985 Bird is a goner. My book shows a complicated procedure that involves removing the intake manifold, and a bunch of other stuff on top of the engine. Anybody know of some shortcuts I could take?

I know no real shortcuts, mind you I have never looking in a manuel to change head gaskets either.  The best advice I can give you is that this job is big enough to warrant labeling everything you remove with a marker/tape, I mean wire connectors, bolts, rockets pushrods lifters etc.. (all must go back in the exact same place ie: number 1 intake, number 1 exhaust).  This cuts hours off reassembley if you have never done this type of work before.  Also change the oil when you are done, and this is a good time to flush the cooling system.

Frist off how did u concluded that the passenger side head gasket is gone?
I have seen people take heads off only to find out they did not need to.
If u have head gasket gone then u better take both heads off get them decked.

What is wrong with the motor that makes u feel the head gasket is gone.
