Title: Moonroof...
Post by: Carl on October 12, 2006, 12:21:53 PM
I have a Skyport XL moonroof, and I need a new latch and also a new seal. Anyone know of a good place to find those?

Thank you!

That would be a sunroof, not a moonroof. You can try Googling the company but they (like so many others) are probably out of business.

Go to JC Whitney and get a new sunroof (cost us about $140.00).They have nice ones that are good quality. We installed one in the Neon my wife had a few years ago.Get one a little bigger than what you have and start from scratch.Just a thought.

I have a good seal and latch (and glass for that matter) out of an '84 TC.  Post some pics of what you have and I can tell you if that's what I have.

Also, what's the difference between moonroof and sunroof?  I know Ford came up with the term moonroof, but does that mean non-power?

No, sunroofs can also open all the way. They slide back over the roof; sometimes referred to as a "spoiler" sunroof.
A moonroof slides back under the roof; sometimes referred to as an "inbuilt" sunroof.

a moon roof is glass and a sunroof is solid to clear this up.  the term moonroof means being able to see the moon through the roof.

I've always thought...

Sunroof = Pop Open

Moonroof = Pop open or slide back and open all the way.

Uh...
So you can't see the sun through a sunroof?
I've never heard the term "pop-up moonroof" before.

Everybody go here:

That should finally clear it up.

I always thought it was that sunroofs were just glass, it didnt matter if they just pop up or slide back or forward or sideways for that matter, and moonroofs had a panel that slid out to cover the glass from the inside to "eclipse" the sun?

Wow you guys are FUNNY! A "moonroof" is the powered glass unit installed by Ford on the ASSEMBLY LINE. All the dealer-installed and owner-hacked  is a sunroof. IE- moonroof cars are hard to find and worth $$$, sunroof cars are hack jobs that are worthless, get it now? Ford did alot of extra gusseting to the moonroof cars. I've had to send otherwise perfectly good Birds to the grave because the sunroof job was sooo hack. I had a 88 TC Gunmetal/Raven AUTO with wrinkled 1/4's (101K miles) from such a py job. As soon as I see a hacked sunroof, I walk away.

what I meant by solid was a metal movable piece. example: dads pinto had a crank open metal sunroof.    and by see the moon through the roof was with it closed because well you know it gets kinda cold at night some places.  :hick:
