Title: Dual Exhaust Vs. Larger Single
Post by: 86 night cat on October 08, 2006, 01:38:47 AM
I have been comptemplating putting dual exhaust on my 86 Cougar and i just read an article on CoolCats about using a larger bore single exhaust as an alternative. what would be the advantages of either one? I know that duals are cooler in general than a single, but would the larger bore single have a similar power advantage with less cost?

single 3" would be better if you have to have a stock style.  Dual's would be cheaper because you dont have to make the bends as tight and you dont have to have every single peice custom made or fitted.

Going single exhaust you wouldn't have to relocate your fuel filter. but you already know that ;)

A larger single would benefit you but dual would be better because each cylinder emits a pulse of exhaust gas and if it all merges into one single pipe, the pulses will interfere with each other and create more backpressure.  Having an H or X pipe makes duals even better because the exhaust can switch over to the other pipe if there is too much restriction. That is just my intuitive thinking.  Plus dual exhaust would sound better and look better too.

What I mean to say is that even if you had the same overall total cross sectional area of pipe, the dual setup would flow more freely.
