Title: Another fuel pump?
Post by: Dansbirds on October 06, 2006, 03:05:32 PM
Well changed the inertia switch which was definitly bad(would not reset) and now it starts and dies. I hear nothing at all from the fuel pump or the relay and have convinced myself its probably the pump. Any other things to check before dropping the tank? Atleast it died in my driveway. Its a 87 with the 3.8. Thanks guys.

If the FP relay is not clicking...then the pump isn't getting power.

I'd check the relay out before I dropped the tank.

Had the same thought so I just got back from getting a relay. No click.

Then check to see if you are getting power to the FP relay. It gets energized by the ECU relay.  You should have 12V on one big wires going into the FP relay at all times and then on one of the smaller wires, you should get a quick 12V when you turn the key to RUN and it should be continuous in START.

I stand corrected, upon further review (and younger ears) the relay does click. I occassionally get a slight buzz from the pump but not enough to run. Here is my uneducated guess, nearly dead fuel pump not pumping with enough pressure to get it to run. Sound possible?

Very possible because your Bird requires about 40 psi to run.. put a gauge on the line before dropping the tank. the fitting on the gas line looks like a tire valve. screw the proper gauge on it..
