Title: Mass air swap
Post by: tireshredder on September 29, 2006, 05:10:47 PM
I about to swap a 351w into the Bird, and i'm going from speed density to Mass air.  Im using a 70mm sensor with what i believe to be a stock 90's computer from a Mustang. I think i heard somewhere that the computer need to be calibrated for the size of the sensor, but i cant seem to find it.  Has anyone else heard this? Would it be easier to replace the wiring harness or should i get a piggyback harness? Also, do i need a new MAP sensor?

the MAF sensor has to be matched, or callibrated for the size injectors you are useing on a 5.0. not the computer. as for a harness, all you need is a "piggyback" MAF harness. i just listed one on ebay with an A9L. you can get them for like 35-40 bucks.

u can find a maf from a sn-95 5.0 mustang, that will be bigger then the old fox maf's and have the same calibration for a HO... but im not sure about the 351, its probley the same tho if your useing same cam. and if your dareing enough, you can go to a junkyard and look for  a maf car and pull the plug off and cut back as much wire as you can, then pin it up yourself. and about the map, its a bap now, instead of the vacume line going to it, it's a white tube that comes off and uses that to find the barimetric pressure as opposed to manifold pressure. what kind of work are you doing to the 351? just like a stock 94+  5.7?

It's a basic rebuild because it's my first, but im adding a gt40 intake, headers, and i just found a cobra computer.  I'm going to make an cold air intake for it.  I'll replace the cam and heads later when more funds come in:)

Remember, the Cobra computer has a speed limiter and slightly less aggresive timing/fuel curves believe it or not.

How would i get the sensor calibrated?  Would i need to buy a new module, or can a shop do it?
