Title: So ya think it's easy selling on eBay (long but amusing post)...
Post by: Thunder Chicken on September 28, 2006, 06:39:46 PM
Well, generaly it is, but occasionally you get a real winner. Below you'll find a transcript of an email conversation I had been having with a Camaro owner that bought one of my sequencer kits a year and a half ago. This may well be the longest post I've ever made in any forum, but I've gotta vent, and this is just too good. Really. I'm generally not into C&P-ing conversations, but this kid is just too stupid not to share.
The gist of the whole thing: The guy bought a sequencer for his Camaro in May of 2005. It worked fine until August of this year, so he requested a warranty replacement. I obliged, with my only request being that he send the item back via USPS instead of FedEx. FedEx charges a "Brokerage fee" starting at $20. He ignored my request and sent it back via FedEx, and sure as there's shiznit in a cat I received a bill from FedEx this morning for $19 and change. Outraged, I called FedEx, where I was told that I could simply ignore the bill, and if I didn't pay it the sender would be responsible. I gleefully wrote this Camaro guy to tell him this, and that's where the fun began. And now, having presented the plot to tonight's story, I present you with tonight's story. A long read, but it gets pretty amusing:
The start:
Quote from: Brendan Guffey
Tuesday, August 01, 2006 3:09 PM I had mailed you a week or so back and told you of my problems with my sequential tail light module. The problem is persisting even after following the directions you gave to adjust the system.
I'm wonder what steps should be taken from here? can i send the unit in? if it is malfuncitoning still for you, do i receive a new unit? what do i do in the meantime as far as lights are concerned? do i unhook all the connections that are in there for the module? or do i clip wires ? what should i do? thank you Brendan Guffey
My reply:
Quote from: Thunder Chicken
Hi...
You can send the module back, and we will test it. If it's defective it will be replaced. To send it back, be sure to follow these instructions carefully - failure to do so will result in the package being refused at customs:
Send the package via USPS (NOT UPS or FedEx). On any customs forms or stckers you have to fill out, write WARRANTY RETURN ITEM and in any space where it asks you for a declared value enter "0". You MUST enter "0" for the declared value. Entering anyn value other tha ) or not entering anything at all will result in customs refusing the package.
To remove the sequencer from your car, simply cut the sequencer wires (BE CERTAIN TO LEAVE AT LEAST 12" OF WIRING ON THE SEQUENCER SO IT MAY BE TESTED). Once the sequencer wires are cut, connect all the wires together (on each side of the car). For example, on the left side, connect the green, white, black and red wires together, and do the same for the right side. Do not connect the ground wire from the sequencer to anything. This will return your signal lights to "normal" and will allow you to drive the car while waiting for the results of your return.
Note that it is clearly stated to NOT use FedEx. His reply:
Quote from: Brendan Guffy
Tuesday, August 01, 2006 5:10 PM That sounds good, what if the sequencer is NOT defective? is there a way you can make sure it is working order and return it? thanks
My reply
Quote from: Thunder Chicken
If it is not defective, it will be returned to you.
His reply:
Quote from: Brendan Guffy
Monday, August 07, 2006 10:20 PM Ok i just removed the un it from my vehicle i now need to know where to send it. Hopefully it is defective or you all can fix it! thanks brendan
Send the package via USPS (NOT UPS or FedEx). On any customs forms or stckers you have to fill out, write WARRANTY RETURN ITEM and in any space where it asks you for a declared value enter "0". You MUST enter "0" for the declared value. Entering any value other than "0" or not entering anything at all will result in customs refusing the package.
Note that the explicit instructions to NOT use FedEX are once again mentioned.
His reply (this was the first sign of trouble, as USPS does not ask for all this info):
Quote from: Brendan Guffey
Wednesday, August 30, 2006 12:53 AM Hey i'm planning on returning my module and i'm having some problems sending it. 1. your phone number 2. the unit value 3.currency of settlement 4. country of origin (where it was made) 5. total value of shipment. you guys have been great to deal with in the past hope to hear from you ASAP! thanks Brendan Guffey
Note that he asked questions that were already answered in red above (I did not add that red text just now, BTW - the emails were sent like that to him).
Seeing trouble, I wrote:
Quote from: Thunder Chicken
Hi...
As mentioned below in my return instructions. The value and value of shipment has to be "0" as it is a warranty return, I am not buying the item from you, it is being returned for repair/replacement. You have to write "warranty return" on the customs form or it may get refused. It was made in Canada and the phone number is 902-XXX-XXXX. It also has to be sent via USPS.
Carmen
So he writes:
Quote from: Brendan Guffey
Wednesday, August 30, 2006 11:40 AM I can't send it USPS...A) i already paid for fed ex, and b) there are no USPS drop boxes near me.
In a really stupid move on my part (stupid because I should have told him to abide by my rules or get bent), I say:
Quote from: Thunder Chicken
HI... FedEx may be OK as long as they do not attempt to charge their "Brokerage Fee" as they ususally to for Canadian receivers. This "brokerage fee" ranges from $20-$40. If the "brokerage fee" is applied the parcel will be refused. This is why we said in or first email (and on our warranty page included with the kit) to not use that delivery service.
So the parcel arrives a few days later. Lo-and-behold, not only did he not follow my instructions to not send it via FedEx, he also enters a declared value of $50. Oddly enough, the driver does not request any money, so I accept the parcel. I test it, it is indeed defective, so I send him a replacement. I then get this from him:
Quote from: Brendan Guffey
Thursday, September 21, 2006 7:06 PM Hey you guys took care of everything wonderfully...got the new module in adn it's working great...i know i shouldnt...but is there a way to adjust it so they run through the sequence a bit slower?
thanks again Brendan
I write back:
Quote from: Thunder Chicken
Hi Brendan..
Glad to hear the sequencer is working for you. To answer your question: The sequencer has the ability to go slower but is limited by the turn signal flasher in your car. If you could find a slower flasher you could slow down the sequencing effect.
And that brings us to today. Today i received a bill from FedEx for a "brokerage fee" of almost $20. Strangely enough, the bill came via Canada Post, but that's besides the point. I called the number on the bill fully expecting to give FedEx a big "shag YOU" and tell them that they'd never get the money. Turns out I didn't have to - the FedEx guy said that if I didn't want to pay the bill, or if I felt I shouldn't have to (and given the multiple warnings to the sender I definitely felt this way) I could just ignore it, and after 90 days they'd bill him. Apparently when you send something via FedEx you agree that if the receiver refuses to pay the brokerage fee it's your responsibility. I thanked the FedEx guy and wrote this email *note* All email quotes from this point on were from today:
Quote from: Thunder Chicken
HI Brendan...
THis is to let you know that today I received an invoice from FedEx in the amount of $19.61 for the customs clearance of the item you returned. This is why I told you not to send the item via FedEx. I have called the number on the invoice and was informed that if I don't pay the invoice within 90 days you (the shipper) will be responsible for the charges. Obviously I will not be paying the invoice since I told you originally not to use FedEx and also told you to declare the value at "0" which you also failed to do. I just thought I'd let you know because in 90 days you'll be getting a bill from FedEx
He writes back:
Quote from: Brendan Guffey

Quote from: Brendan Guffey
I paid to send it out, you pay to send it back...woops for you...
As any of you that have read my posts or emails know, I do not tolerate rudeness. My reply:
Quote from: Thunder Chicken
Woops for me? Ya think? FedEx already told me that in their agreement with with you, that you accepted when you sent the item (guess you shoulda read before signing - WOOPS) you agreed to pay the brokerage fee if I refuse to. They've already told me to ignore the invoice because your account will be billed for it in 90 days if I don't pay it. I guess we'll see who it's "woops" for...
Oh, and you're lucky this invoice arrived after your item was sent, else you'd have lost it until the issue was settled. I guess you'll be a bit more careful about sending it back if it ever fails again, because I know I'll be a good deal more careful about returning it to you. I would just cancel your warranty altogether, but instead I'll just flag my records to remind me in future. I'm interested to see if you'd be bold enough to send it back if the need ever arises...
And then all hell broke loose:
Quote from: Brendan Guffey
Wow...i was...just for a moment...ready to send people to you for sequential tail light services. I"m a big player in the f-body world (aka camaros, firebirds, trans ams) but all of a sudden SignalWave is going to get all my and their business...woops for you sir.
See you fail to understand. There IS NO usps that ships big packages in the small town where i'm located. You fail to understand that FedEx WILL NOT EXCEPT 0 as a value. Are you stupid? its an age old adage that a happy customer tells one person about their experience...but an unhappy customer tells 10...well trust me..i'm posting on all the f-body boards not to go through "thundercatz" who the hell names their company after a third rate cartoon...
Naturally I was not gonna take that kind of bullshiznit. The fingers started flying:
Quote from: Thunder Chicken
That's the best you can come up with? Making fun of my company because it shares the name with a "third rate" 80's cartoon? And then you spelled the company name wrong, to boot. What are you, 6 years old? First off, the common name is coinicidence - my company is named after Thunderbirds ("thunder") and Cougars ("cats"), the cars that these sequencers were designed for. Of course a "Big player" in cars should know something like that, especially given the fact that a Thunderbird is pictured on my website...
As for your claim that there are no post offices near you I just looked up your address and ZIP code on USPS.com and found no fewer than eight full service postal stations within ten miles of your ZIP code. Proof? http://www.switchboard.com/bin/cgidir.dll?MEM=1355&PR=139&ST=2&CSF=LocatorPostOffice&cid=1222&SD=100&A=&T=Mankato&S=MT&Z=56001&Search.x=40&Search.y=9
The fact of the matter is that you failed to follow my very simple return instructions. These instuctions were provided to you AT LEAST three times before you chose to ignore them (once on the warranty sheet and twice in emails). I could have (and in retrospect, should have) refused your package when the FedEx truck showed up, but I didn't. Now your ignorance or stubbornness (or, as it appears, both) have cost you money because exactly what I said would happen if you used FedEx has happened. WOOPS (oh, by the way, it's spelled "WHOOPS").
Now, Mr. "Big Player", you can go ahead and bad mouth me and my company in your F-body forums. I've sold hundreds of these kits to Camaro/Firebird owners, all of whom have been very happy (including you until you found out that your own stupidity cost you money - once I get some time I'll be sure to "troll" the F-body forums and post copies of your email communications in every thread of yours that I find, and it shouldn't be hard to find a big player such as yourself). In fact one customer was so happy he set up his own website with detailed instructions on how to install the kit in his '00 Firebird and gave me permission to use the instructions. That sure sounds like an unhappy customer, doesn't it?
And then there's the "I was going to brag up your product" foolishness. Considering it's been more than a year since you bought, I'd have thought that any "bragging" would have been done long ago. Please, spare me your foolishness and have somebody change your diaper.
You can go ahead and buy your SignalWave products (from your email I can only assume that you've got a whole fleet of F-bodies waiting to have sequencers installed, but you were apparently waiting over a year to see if I'd accept your mistake). Truthfully I'd much rather let other companies deal with the likes of you.
The long and short of it: You caused the whole problem. Had you followed my instructions we wouldn't even be having this discussion. My refusal to pay FedEx for your inability to follow simple instructions is at the root of this whole matter. My customer service was exemplary, as you even stated in your email three days ago. Your mistake, your problem. WOOPS indeed.
He then dropped about eighty IQ points:
Quote from: Brendan Guffey
first off http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/woops you can use it both ways dickweed. Second...i paid like 30 bucks (including the NEW charge) to get a NEW sequencer...haha. Secondly, my "bad install" you are referring to was as per YOUR instructions. So try again on that one.
And as for thunderbirds...i forgot they existed...i like to put shiznitty cars out of my memory banks.
and i wasn't going to "brag up your PRODUCT" i was going to brag up your service...but apparently your time of the month came and so did the bitching...who'd have thunk it eh? (and yes i know thunk isn't a word). So lets see...one year after install the sequencer fails, thats a sign of quality. Do you just sell shiznitty products? should i expect ANOTHER failure in under a year? or should i just put my order into signalwave now? i'm sure they'll be happy to badmouth a third rate "competitor" haha.
the long...nay..short of it. Don't buy car parts from canada...they are hardly a country anyway..."look we are starting a country...oh shiznit...no one came" haha. Is it my fault you all deal to the US and can't handle the customs shiznit!? haha.
My final reply to this idiot:
Quote from: Thunder Chicken
Better not buy cars from Canada either. Guess this means you'll be selling your Canadian-built F-body and buying something more American. Perhaps a nice Honda Accord? Maybe a Toyota Tacoma? American as apple pie...
Seems to me Canada is a lot higher in world opinion than USA, but I won't stoop to your level by putting down an entire country for the sake of one spectacularly stupid person.
Thanks for admitting to your "bad install" - you've given me excuse to void your warranty. Consider it over. But FYI, I was not referring to your installation when i said you couldn't follow instructions, I was referring to your sending it back wrong.
Customs? I have no problem with customs. I just tell 'em to charge the idiots on the other side of the border that can't seem to read english. Seems to me that you're the one that has the problem with customs.
Now, having said all that, it's clear I'm arguing with a either child, a retard, or a retarded child (the latter seems most likely). I'm quite finished now. I have added your email addy to my spam list, so you can type away, nobody will ever see your replies. Of course this also means that I won't receive any future requests for tech support or warranty issues from you, but I'd just ignore those anyway. I won't be replying to any of your emails, but rest assured that I will be looking in the F-body forums, and if I find any posts by you (given your "big player" status it should be easy) I will be posting this entire conversation. We'll let intelligent people figure this one out for themselves...
So there ya have it. An exhausting read, I know, but entertaining. Note that I didn't even take him up on his "Thunderbirds = shiznit" statement by telling him about his F-body and mullet. The opinions of stupid people don't matter, after all. Entertaining or not, the next person to tell me "The customer is always right" is gonna have a wild 6'3" 260-lb ape on their hands...

I had a similar conversation via eBay when I sold a Taurus SHO police grille. The potential bidder suggested that I kill the auction and sell it to him ASAP so his son could get an early birthday present. Obviously, I declined his offer. What's amazing is he ended up winning the auction (just shy of $200). When I told him how rare the grilles were, he responded with an astonishingly arrogant response. It went along the lines of, "Uh... yeah. I know it's rare. I guess owning SEVEN Taurus SHOs makes me ignorant to the parts. I suppose it also doesn't matter that I own a Taurus SHO speed shop. I must be an idiot."
Holy bacon. How the hell was I supposed to know that? There are some real pen 15s on this planet.

I guess that's worse than the time I lost out on about $50 worth of shipping charges when a woman bought an XBOX off of me and then decided that a used Xbox shouldn't have dust on it or anything. I said I'd refund her money in full if she paid the return shipping, but she refused to even do that. She wanted the originaly shipping costs AND the return costs paid back to her. I actually got a phone call from her, yelling at me. Surprisingly, though she gave me a positive feedback. Probably the most expensive feedback I ever got, though.

Eric: I didn't post this because he made a mistake. I posted this because of how he reacted to his mistake. "Woops for you sir" (which to me means "Yeah I screwed up but it's your problem") was simply the wrong thing to say, and then to compound it with his stupid statements about my company name, my car, and my country because he couldn't think of anything else to say but just wanted to say something nasty... well, that's why we're here :D
Baxo: I'm rather sure the F-body guys would probably get a charge out of the behaviour of one of their "big players"
