Title: My god, I have to remove my exhaust to drop the pan.
Post by: t0x1k on December 29, 2004, 12:22:29 PM
I've got it completely unbolted, but it won't drop past the exhaust, it's stuck on the precats and that connection before the cat.
I don't know if this was fords stupid design or the guy had those part replaced... I've done everything I can to get the pan out. So I'm glad I cut the ler off or dropping the exhaust would've been impossible.

I got the exhaust off, but I managed to break a bolt in the process so I have to buy a new bolt since I don't have any that fit. I'm done everything, hopefully changing the gasket fixed the leak... Last time I change my tranny fluid...

When I had my tranny pan off I put a plug in it so it can be drained easier before removal.  I highly recommend doing it.  Also this way I can change my fluid more often and I don't worry about the filter till every 25-30,000 mi or so.  A better option would be to add an external filter as well.

Is it bad to run a car with just the exhaust manifold and precats? I mean I know I'd be polluting but I'd like to finish the tranny...

it's fine if you don't mind the noise and vibration.  Make sure you don't park on anything flammable.

Unfortunately  the pan really does not fit around the exhaust pipes,  although with some creative wiggling it will come off but it sure is a PITA and takes lots of patience.  BTW you can get a FMS chrome pan with a drain plug, which is what I did.

Btw, how much tranny fluid should the tranny take? I poured about 2/3 of a like a 3.5 quart container of mercon/ dexron 3 and it's not showing up on the stick even after 15 minutes of idling time. There is a little bit on the tip which is brown...that's not good, but i'm not worried because the tranny oil i took out was red...

As for running without the cat, it sounds beefy, like a dragster...Deafening.

Should be about 6 quarts in the tranny not including torque convertor. Someone will wanna verify that tho.

Like I said, someone will wanna verify that, also I used an AOD tranny as my reference so if it's something other than that it's not the right amount.

well it's an 87 3.8l....i'm guessing it's an AOD, so, will 3.5 quarts be ok just for the trip to pep boys?

I personally wouldn't risk it, just weigh the cost of a new tranny vs. taking another car or bumming a ride from a friend for a beer or whatever to pick up a few dollars in fluid.
