Last night, MS was offering 100,000 free copies of Vista Ultimate PreRC1 (basically the version they send out for previews and stuff; close to done), so I c00ched one. Well today, my installation of XP Pro got corrupted, so I wiped my hard drive and put Vista on here. It is REALLY nice. Auto installed all my drivers; I didn't have to touch a thing. I just popped on the internet instantly and went on my merry way. It's very streamlined too. And keep in mind that this is the 32 bit version, not the 64bit, so I bet I'm not even seeing its full potential. Of course, it'll be VERY expensive for Ultimate ($600 I think), but some versions will be around $200. It's definately better than XP, imo.
if they are still available, where can you get one?
Sorry, they were all taken by the time I woke up at 6:30 this morning :( . I had mine running overnight cause the download was 2 and a half gigs.
About two months ago Microsoft mailed me one for some reason (actually, they mailed me two DVD's, one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit). I dunno why they mailed it - probably because I'm one of the seven people on earth with a legit, registered copy of WinXP :D I still haven't played with it, though - I may set up the Gateway laptop for dual booting, since it's got a 64-bit chip. The beta's expire on June 1, 2007, though...
I plan to get full Vista around April/May, so that works for me!

Theres a pic of Vista on my comp.
...Sooo...you wanna send me that 64bit version? hahahaha
$600! for Ultimate! I guess my Architecture laptop will be staying XP for a while and so will my desktop.
Meh. I guess I'll stay in the stone age with my 2k. I REALLY need to upgrade very soon, but I just don't like XP. And it's a scary proposition that Vista is loaded with even more 'security' bullshiznit.
Woohoo!!! We must be part of some elite brotherhood or something!
But mine is legit without me having to pay for it :D
Amazon.com started taking pre-orders for Vista a few days ago. Their pricing is $199 for Vista Home Edition and $399 for Ultimate Edition.
Yeah....I'll be sticking with XP for a bit.
I have 4 ligeit copys of XP, and I only paid 30 bucks for the last set.
granted they are oem. but still I own em! (though not to proud of it)
Daniel
vista has been nothing but ass for me.
they don't support 3com nics (come on, i have like 10 of 'em, they are the best 10/100 nic EVER)
didn't like USB for , can barely customize it with it telling you that it doesn't think you should do it, no one has video codecs for it yet. and if it was any more bloated you would need deep blue to boot it. I had it on a 1.5 ghz pent. with a gig of ram and it idle at 10% cpu and almost 200 meg of memory.
they really need to work on it. otherwise I am sticking with xp for awhile. i can run xp sp2 on a 300 mhz laptop with 64 meg of ram and steam audio all day long, the vista machine could barely do that.
I havent had any USB problems with my flash drive or webcam.
And yes, the biggest downside of Vista is that it is a resource hog. Using 400megs of RAM on my machine!!! Although my new computer should handle it fine :) .
Microsoft Action Pack Subscriber heh
What??? A new version of Windows that's bloated? Get OUT!!!
Cripes, the first version of Windows I ever had came on a single floppy (MS Windows/286). Then 3.1 on six floppies, then 95 on 24 floppies (you read that right), then 95 on a CD, and so on up to XP. I think a frest install of 95 only took up about 150 megs of HDD space. What's a fresh XP install run now, a gig and a half?
our xp image at my old job was 6 gig!!!!
vista comes only on dvd... i'll run it, cuase i'm a windows dork and that is what pays the bills, but xp sp2 will be my choice till vista tweaks are available to pull that over head down.
i run xp with less than 20 running services.. and is on the machine i use daily.
This is why I'm still on XP Pro SP1. :flip: :flip:
SP1? You cant even get more than a 127GB partition unless you have at least SP2 haha. OMG, new smilies
:pbb:
Anyways, I've downloaded build 5600, which is build RC1, and I got the 64bit version. Runnin on my sister's comp without a hitch. She loves all the gadgets and stuff; her computer came with XP Media Center edition and it was just a POS. I can't wait to put it on my new PC, which I should have runnin next Monday :D .
How does one go about getting a copy to try? Or do you have to be a tester first?
Daniel
BitTorrent :macgun::2gunsfiri
Microsoft was letting the public download RC1 32bit and 64bit, but I think you need a beta tester's key to run it.
Kingcars, that's not true. Xp Pro without a service pack only allows 120-130 GB HDD (I forget exactly the size). I've got a 200 GB HDD with Xp Pro SP1 and I have no problems at all!
Microsoft always comes out with the dumbest ideas to minimize the piracy of their software. For example-WPA...it was sent down thru automatic updates in SP2. So what do you do-disable automatic updates or revert back to SP1.
Real men use Linux :grinno: :grinno:
Hmmm, I coulda sworn that the 127GB bug was from SP1... :toilet:
Nope, just XP Pro without a service pack...close though :sorry:
Muhahaha! Now I, too rock this, how-you-say... Vista. Problem is I have about 14 days to get rid of this pesky activation B.S. or all my hard work is down the drain.
anyone installed RC1 yet? i just downloaded it, it HAS to be better than beta2
Welp looks like I'll be upgrading my ram and installing vista. I talked to my partner and it looks like vista is here. So we have 10 licenses....
How much RAM do you have, Claude? I have a mere Gig and it's about 50% used up at all times. I'm thinking of putting my other gig sticks in, too.
I have RC1 and though I don't have Beta2 to compare it to, it looks pretty complete and hasn't crashed yet. I did run across one irritating thing: I had a music video I was trying to play and it would consistently give me the 'Explorer/Windows Media Player has Stopped Working' message.
same, i had a gig of pc2700 on a xeon 1.8 ghz box and was at like 400+ meg of pagefile and using a constent 25% cpu and about 60% of physical memory with just a few low overhead apps open.
this was on beta2 though
I had to bust open the case tonight to replace a faulty CPU fan so I put the extra gig I had in. Now, running with 2 gigs it still seems unhappy. Stuff loads a little faster, but I still think I'm going to go back to XP. My brother just procured a copy of Media Center so I might rock with that for a little while. I REALLY don't wanna be forced to go back to 2k again.
I'm only rockin 512 mb ram. Looks like I can get a cheap gig stick for about 75 bucks.
I just got my software from school, full version of xp sp2 included. So I may just stick with that for now.
Well, that's it. Vista has BSOD-ed me and "This Software/Peripheral is not compatible with/approved by Windows Vista"-ed me enough. I'm clearing out the little bit of files I've downloaded and going back to Win2K. At least I know it works with every piece of software I have.
This is why I'm still on SP1 with XP :shakeass:
While I'm happy with my XP sp2, I wouldn't mind getting to use a computer with Vista, and playing around with it a bit.
I'm for sure not going to be in any big hurry to change over.
I just tried the new FEAR: Extraction Point demo on my computer just for the hell of it, and it ran like a dream! Even with Vista eating up 40-50% of my RAM. I can't wait to see my new computer chew it up.
I use both of my computers for bussiness and after the compatability issues I had when I tried to run ie7 beta 2( I couldn't even run my mitchell for crying out loud), I can't afford to test a system and lose all my files and crash my hard drive, maybe after it's been released for a while. We all remember how bad xp was when it first came out
Heh, scracth that 2k thing. My CD is scratched too badly, that is. I guess I'll do XP again. Oh well. Right now I'm on a quick install of Ubuntu Linux, just so I can be online again, etc.
I had the same problem. Thankfully IE7 uninstalled easily and didn't require a reformat. I wonder if Mitchell would work if you installed it after installing IE7 (instead of the other way around)...
VISTA UPDATE:
Microsoft sent me another pair of DVD's - Windows Vista RC1. One of these days I'll have to actually install it and see what it's like...
Yeah, aum. Vist really pissed me off yesterday. BSOD's after trying to change video cards. Its about to get wiped.
