I was told that not all c5's had lock up converters? Does anyone know the difference in bell housing from the C4 to C5. Or maybe the difference in converter size.
For the vb, Im assuming its out of the new C4 rather than the older C4. Is that a direct swap or is there modifications needed.
I need to rebuild my C5 out of a 86 cougar. Ive never dug to far into a trans before. On my 97 tbird I pulled the valve body to do a J mod and upgraded some valves.
I have a overhaul book and have many shortcuts saved to my computer with some helpful info to do it. But is this something that can be done by someone that has never done it? What special tools would be needed. Or would you just recommend taking it to a shop and getting over charged?
I attached a pic of my project. Its a 3.8L thunderbird sc motor from a 89supercoupe transplanted into a 88 mustang Lx. :burnout:
Currently im in the break in period of my project. I have a 88 mustang lx with the supercharged V6 from a thunderbird. Most of you guys have been keeping tabs and feeding me input that has been very helpful but my questions continue
When I went looking for a tranny I wanted a C4 but instead some how picked up a C5 from a cougar. Its currently in the car and slips going into gears. Good thing I only paid $50 for it.
Heres my question I have the C5 thats in the car and I have a old 1966 C4 with the 24spline input shaft. Which tranny would be better to rebuild for my application. Or would it be better to find a newer C4from a mustang.
Just looking for some input on what tranny would be better.
The car is just a cruiser, Some 1/4 mile and road coarse. It will never run down the hwy.
For you guys running hi HP and torque is the C5 reliable. any info will help thanks Doug
I did install the pin. The tranny wasnt slipping with the old modulator and no vac. but with the new it slips in 2nd, 3rd. but atleast I know there is a 3rd gear.
Well, I installed the new vac modulator and ran the hose to the vac tree. Now it slips in 2nd but 3rd did come around but also slips. Im guessing the tranny is toast.
I just got done doing some research online for the tranny and found I need vac to the modulator. Also I believe that is where my fluid is leaking from. So I ordered one just to replace it and that way I know it works. Should be here tuesday.
As for the kickdown I probably wont need it since im just gonna manually shift. Not sure what to do about the governer. Just have to see if its gonna be a problem.
Hope hooking the vac line up gives my drive gear. 1&2 are fun but it would be nice to go alittle faster and lower my rpm when cruising.
I guess im not to sure. This tranny is currently in a mustang and I wasnt planning on using any type of kick down. I just thought I could throw it in and shift it manually.
Is there a vaccum spot on the tranny that I need hooked up. I know when I manually down shift its takes some time before it will do it.
As you can tell im not a tranny guys so any help will be great. Basically I have it bolted to the motor drive shaft in and linkage hooked up and that is it. What am I missing or need to do.
Just wanted to check with you guys and see if there was a simple fix for my problem. I got a C5 off a guy and he didnt know if it worked or not. So I put a filter in and fresh oil. Rev, 1st, 2nd all work. the 1-2 shift is fairly hard. But there is no Drive. What would be the cause of this.
The tranny was just to get my project moving before winter but if I can get it to work ill just run with it till it blows up.
Is there a way to remove or bypass the governer from a c5 trans. Im not looking to go fast but on the dyno Id like to be able to do a full pull without the governer getting in the way.
