I was forced to do the same method but with a 20th, it was a whole lot different.
I got 3m electrical tape then i had to layout various lengths hanging from my overhead engine hoist.
I then had to spray paint it "sunburst gold". That is the exact color of the gold on the 20ths.
I then gently lay it atop the existing gold trim then exacto knife / razor blade the excess.
you have to put it on without stretching such that your compensating for hot and cold weather.
mine has been on there since 2009 without a single sign of it wanting to come off, and yes ive been through some pretty agressive car washes also.
Mason,
look at that trim close, i studied hard deciding what to do. If your willing , you can see that there is a "faded" plastic cover over top pretty nice silver paint. That plastic cover does not come off from what i can tell. You may not remember us fiddling with this on the kitchen table a few years ago but thats when i found out there is an actual laminate over top of the color itself.
its a lot easier to see this on that plastic side marker lamp trim piece you just fixed a couple weeks ago.
its my belief that on the removeable hard plastic site trim parts, the center trim will peal out,, not so sure about the rubber molding made into the bumpers though or even the molding along the doors.
couple pics of my gold painted 3m vynal electrical tape install for everyone interested.
ill take a look. gotta redo one of the stripes anyway.

I wouldn't factor them in. I don't take my cars to any of those places as they do a poor job, and typically strip quality wax that you may have spent hours putting on...

for my first post i decided to make it one that showed my '88 tbird and what i did to it today. the silver striping on the trim had worn away to the point where it no longer was pleasant to look at. so i took this opportunity bring the stripes back....but in red. so i went to my local electronics supply store and picked up some red electrical tape and took an hour or two to make it look nice again. the only thing i notice is that nothing else other than the taillights are red. maybe someday i'll put cobra R wheels on and paint the break calipers red. that might bring it all together a little more. but anyway, i think it made my bird look a lot more "mean". what do you all think?
