Electrical Tech / blinkers and dash cluster

And what about bad grounding? Do the turn signals work (outside)?

Nope, they don't work inside or outside

Electrical Tech / blinkers and dash cluster
OK, so I've been reading about others that have had some electrical problems and I don't know if they were quite the same as the issue I'm having.  I'm beginning to think it may be a short, and not just a fuse.  (although I don't have the car with me today, and won't be able to check fuses till this weekend)

1987 Cougar XR7

SO, anyway. I went home for Easter break and as it began to get darker...I flipped on my head lights.
As I did, my digital instrument panel immediately went out.  There is still an illuminated panel, but it's the digits that don't light up.
The only other thing I have noticed is that the turn signals don't work either.

Does this sound like a short circuit or a simple fuse issue?  Since it happened as I turned on the lights, I would assume it to be a fuse, but again...I won't be able to check till this weekend.

Thanks

Misc Tech / A question and a request
will a new one really make that much difference or will it just be less pr0ne to breaking due to the healthier new plastic?

Misc Tech / A question and a request
I HATED taking my car to that guy.  When I was 14 I didn't know any better and that's where my dad would send it.  It seemed like he would just pull random parts out of the bone yard and if he didn't have something...he'd 'afro-engineer' something back together with whatever he had laying around the shop.

Live and learn.  I actually think I will be able to snag one over new years when I head to my grandparents place.  I know where a t-bird is chillin in some trees.

Misc Tech / A question and a request
It seems to rev up and down when I idle in park, and I can definitely see how a bad seal can cause that.  Can't say I've noticed anything with it when I drive.  Gears all read good, and fuel economy is about 22-24mpg highway.
That would be great if you've got one to spare.  I know of a "You-Pick-It salvage lot a few hours from where I live, but they have no way of telling me what is left on any vehicle in the yard.  I've been there before and they have one 88 cougar LS, a few 86's and some thunder birds...but they've all been picked purdy clean.  (never looked under the hood though)

Misc Tech / A question and a request
First off, I stopped at my parents house after a 2h drive and noticed my heater wasn't working very well.  Old car, didn't give it much thought.  Decided to look under the hood to hear/listen for something obvious.  When I got out of the car, I could hear a hissing sound under the hood, and decided to investigate.

I had a couple issues with it 15 years ago when I was in high school and sent it to the local mechanic.  Even back then, parts were hard to find and I never questioned his method of "fixing" problems.  It appears that (if it was a similar problem, he used the ole JB Weld Solution)
I know he fixed a broken cruse control twice by soldering it back together.

If you could tell me what this piece is in control of so I know what problem it is causing...and perhaps direct me to where I could find a new one.  The car still runs well, gas mileage is still wonderful (comparatively speaking) but the only real thing I noticed wasn't working perfect was the heater.

Could this be the problem...or should I address that heater thing another time?

Misc Tech / Got a bad horn
I have a horn that sounds simply awful on my 87 XR7.  This hasnt really been a problem since i broke my horn button long ago (but have since gotten it replaced)
Now that I CAN honk the horn again...I dont even want to until I get something with a little better sound inside.

HOW ON EARTH do you go about getting the old horn out and the new one in?

I have found where it resides, but cant for the life of me, figure out how to remove the sucker.

Do you have to take off the inside of the wheel well or whats the deal?

Thanks guys  :hick:

Body/Appearance/Interior / HID's in a turbocoupe
Quote from: Cougar8775;326321
it would be difficult to use those particular lights in our cars. But take a look at what cougars_2_go did to his cougar. They look mean and are done right. Plus i think running hid's would possibly melt the housings due to the higher temps.

difficult is an understatement, and yes, his lights look great, but what do you mean by "done right"?
Also, if I do/did decide to build a custom housing, it would be mostly fiberglass resin or some sort of bondo like material with a high temp resistant gloss black insides.
for $60, i'd be more than willing to experiment.  it costs money to learn from your own mistakes.  Id rather chop up a frankenstein set and hope they work, than chop up a stock set and waste them.

Body/Appearance/Interior / HID's in a turbocoupe
I posted this in another spot about trying to build my own custom lights and it seems to be right in line with what you're thinking.

I'm thinking about building a one piece housing to mount on each side of my XR7 and then place the projector lights accordingly and replace the factory lenses with the black out lens covers.

thoughts??

If it were to be done, Id be interested in trying to wire up some HIDs too.

Body/Appearance/Interior / Custom Built Headlight Cluster
these are kinda what I'm thinking about chopping up.  They might be a bit small, but I think i could find some way to make them (or another version) work as long as i can get the lens to fit right and of course the wires working right.

Plan, is to mold a once pice replacement for the 3 lens cluster and have them spaced accordingly with the black out lens covers only. No more py yellow or kinda clear lenses.

(someone had suggested the OEM lens helps to focus the light...i personally feel that it assists in scattering the light in all directions rather than focusing it...anyone know for sure)

I had a thread a couple years ago about custom headlights, but all of the pic links are now dead.

http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=6889

I might be able to find some of the originals on my hard drive at home.  I had some ideas but never pursued it much past the concept stage.  The most promising lead at the time was to gut Lincoln LS lights and most likely vacuum form a new lens to fit the shape of the car.

thanks...it would be GREAT if you could rustle up the pics.  i'd love ot see them.

I will be doing some photoshop work to visualize myself shortly.

I checked on a place to re-do all six light housings with the vacuum chrome application, (The side markers would be $30.00 each, the signal pieces would be $35.00 and the main head lamps $45.00 each so each 3 piece set would be $110.00.) and that seemed a bit high..but its better than not being safe at night.  10+ years for $220 might  be worth it since I'd really like to completely ditch the stock lenses and just use the GTS lens covers fitted into place.

Suspension/Steering / Time for new Wheels
I'm in the market for some new wheels and I dont think that swapping over to the 5 lug option is going to be in my budget after reading up on the work involved.

Has anyone used 4-5 lug conversion kits instead?

Also, i see the stock offset on the ten hole sport wheels is 22.5mm (if memory serves me)
what I am wondering is what offset could be used either +/- and still have the proper look.
